The Grand Canyon University baseball team (13-11, 4-1 WAC) secured their second Western Athletic Conference series victory with a 12-6 win over Chicago State (9-12, 0-2 WAC) today at Brazell Stadium in Phoenix, Ariz. The Antelopes collected 13 hits in the game, their ninth double-digit effort at the plate.

"It was nice to get on the board early and we had really good at-bats early," said head coach Andy Stankiewicz. "We committed to contact and stayed up the middle, so that put pressure on them. But then we kind of shut it down for a bit, and that's the part that we have to get these guys to understand. Just because you jump out in front doesn't mean you can go on cruise control. But anytime you win a game it's big. I was glad to see that we swung the bats well today."
A number of different GCU players recorded multi-hit games, including
Garrett Jeffries and
Michael Pomeroy with three hits apiece.
Chad De La Guerra and
Humberto Aranda added two hits, while Aranda plated a season-best four RBI.
Chris Lindmark had two RBI for the Lopes.
Andrew Naderer got the start on the mound and improved to 4-3 on the season after allowing five runs on 10 hits and two walks with six strikeouts over 7.1 innings of work.
Trent Wilson entered the game with the Lopes up 8-5 and tossed 1.2 innings to get his first save of the season.
"Andrew pitched well, but I kind of challenged him a little bit because he is better than that," added Stankiewicz. "He made big pitches when he had to. And you always take a win when you can get it."
"Trent got a big double play in the eighth inning," said Stankiewicz. "He pitches down in the zone. Coach Choate has his pitchers ready to field comebackers and that is one of the strengths of our program. We take that part seriously."
GCU jumped out to a quick lead and withheld a Chicago State rally in the middle innings to win their third straight game. It was 7-0 in favor of the Lopes after three innings, but the Cougars made it a two-run game by the end of the sixth. However, GCU responded by scoring five more runs over the next two frames.
GCU made it a 6-0 game in the first inning as every batter in the order reached base.
David Walker opened the frame with a triple to left-centerfield and scored on a fielder's choice error on
Ben Mauseth's at-bat. De La Guerra doubled to right field and was followed by a walk to
Matt Haggerty and a bunt single by Jeffries to load the bases. Aranda then singled to left field and coupled with an error by the leftfielder, the Lopes cleared the bases before Aranda was called out at third.
Brandon Smith reached on a fielder's choice and came around to score the sixth run on an RBI double to right-center off the bat of Lindmark.
Lindmark made it a 7-0 game in the third with a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Jeffries.
The Cougars got on the board in the fourth inning and tacked on four more runs over the course of the fifth and sixth. Their last run of the game came via a solo home run with two outs in the top of the ninth.
Jeffries led off the seventh with his second triple of the season and came around to score on a sacrifice fly to center by Aranda. GCU scored four more runs in the eighth by virtue of a walk, two hit by pitch, two hits, and a Cougars error.
"We have played good baseball thus far," said Stankiewicz. "We have one more game tomorrow. Greed is good in the game of baseball. We are trying to challenge our guys to come back tomorrow and play good baseball and see if we can't get the third one."
The series between the two teams concludes tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. The game can be heard live on Independent Talk 1100 AM KFNX (online at
