The Grand Canyon University baseball team (11-11, 2-1 WAC) welcomes Chicago State (9-10, 0-0) to Brazell Stadium for their 2014 Western Athletic Conference home opener and the first-ever conference series for the Cougars. It is the first WAC series at home for the Antelopes since hosting Utah from April 25-26, 1998, when GCU was last a member of the WAC. THE LAST SERIESThe Antelopes dropped two of three games at Big West Conference member UC Irvine from March 21-23. GCU was shutout by the Anteaters in the first two games before bouncing back to collect 13 hits and score nine runs in a series finale victory. Jorge Perez was tagged with the loss on Friday night, allowing two runs on four hits in an 8.0-inning complete game effort. David Walker went 2-for-4 in the second game. Coley Bruns tossed his second straight complete game and picked up the 9-1 win on Sunday, a game in which Josh Ethier went 3-for-4 at the plate.
BRUNS GETTING IT DONEColey Bruns is 4-0 in five starts this season for the 'Lopes, allowing just 8 earned runs in 38.1 innings for a 1.88 ERA. He has struck out a team-best 32 batters. Opponents are hitting .219 against the right-hander, who has issued just 7 walks. Bruns has tossed back-to-back complete games, allowing just 2 earned runs over 18.0 innings with 4 walks and 10 strikeouts.
WALKER GETTING ON BASEDavid Walker leads the team with a .495 on-base percentage and is batting at a .375 clip (30-for-80) in 22 games. He also leads the 'Lopes with 10 multi-hit affairs and has currently hit safely in nine of his last 10 games (17-for-37, .459). Walker was named WAC Hitter of the Week on March 10 after going 8-for-15 (.533) with six runs, three RBI, one double, three walks, and four stolen bases. He currently leads all WAC players with 11 stolen bases.
ARANDA HAVING HIS WAYHumberto Aranda is batting .38 (18-for-47) in 14 games for GCU, including 11 starts behind the plate. He has 9 runs, a team-best 5 doubles, a triple, home run, and 9 RBI. Aranda boasts a .596 slugging and .420 on-base percentage. He hit safely in a season-best five straight games from March 8-16 (11-for-22, .500) and has two 4-hit affairs on the season.
