In a thrilling come from behind win, the Grand Canyon University baseball team (12-11, 3-1 WAC) came out victorious in a 2-1, 11-inning affair against visiting Chicago State (9-11, 0-1 WAC) in a Western Athletic Conference matchup tonight at Brazell Stadium in Phoenix, Ariz.
It was the longest game for the 'Lopes this season and their longest since also playing 11 innings in an 8-9 loss at Tampa on March 10, 2012.

The Antelopes trailed the entire game until getting a run across in the ninth inning. After neither team scored in the 10
th inning, a double off the bat of
Michael Pomeroy plated
Matt Haggerty with the winning run in the 11
th.
Haggerty scored both of GCU's runs in the game as eight different players collected a hit.
"Whenever you win, it's a good game," said head coach Andy Stankiewicz. "It wasn't pretty early. We hit a lot of fly balls, and we talk about it all the time, that we have to commit to hitting the ball on the ground. But hopefully we will learn from it. Their starter (Eric Hall) pitched a nice game and kept us off balance, but we have to have a better approach at the plate this weekend in order to have success."
Starter
Jorge Perez did not factor in the decision after allowing a run on six hits and two walks with three strikeouts over 6.1 innings of work. After issuing a walk to his leadoff batter, Perez retired the next 11 batters before the Cougars hit back-to-back singles in the fourth. Four of Chicago State's six hits against Perez came in the fourth and fifth innings as they scored their lone run in the fifth.
Relievers
Ethan Evanko,
Scott Serigstad,
Coley Bruns, and
Malcolm Purdy (1-1) combined to toss 4.2 scoreless innings of relief as Purdy picked up his first win of the season.
"Jorge competed again, and he is going to be fine," added Stankiewicz. "Ethan came in and gave us a couple big outs when we needed them, and Malcolm did a great job to get the win."
GCU had runners on base in each of the first three innings, including runners in scoring position in both the first and second frames, but the Cougars struck first. After putting runners on second and third with one out in the fifth inning, a fielder's choice got the Chicago State runner out at first, but a single up the middle to the next batter handed the Cougars the 1-0 lead before the third out was recorded.
Neither team scored again until the 'Lopes knotted the game at one run apiece in the ninth. Haggerty led off the frame with a single through the left side. After advancing to second on a wild pitch, he came around to cross home on a RBI single to right by
Garrett Jeffries.
Chris Lindmark then put runners on first and third with a single through the right side before the inning was over.
"Garrett has continually given us great at-bats off the bench," Stankiewicz said. "He had a good at-bat. He is patient and disciplined and he knows his strike zone."
The Cougars had runners on in both the 10
th and 11
th innings but were unable to get past first base.
In the bottom half of the 11
th inning, Haggerty reached via an error on the Cougars' third baseman and moved to second on a failed pickoff attempt by the pitcher. Pomeroy then promptly plated the game-winning run with a double to right-centerfield.
