The Grand Canyon University baseball team (14-11, 5-1 WAC) got their first series sweep of the 2014 season in convincing fashion, winning 15-5 over Chicago State (9-12, 0-3 WAC) in a Western Athletic Conference game that was called after 7.0 innings due to the conference's 10-run rule. It was the fourth straight win for GCU.

For the second straight game and 10
th time overall, the Antelopes collected double-digit hits with 16 en route to scoring a season-best 15 runs.
"Anytime you can win three games in conference is always a huge plus," said head coach Andy Stankiewicz. "Like yesterday, we got off to a good start but didn't look so good in the middle. But we finished well. We still have a lot of work in front us, and I reminded the guys that we have to play our game. We have to play better defense."
Coley Bruns (5-0) tossed his third complete game in a row, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits and a walk with five strikeouts over 7.0 innings of work. Over his last three starts, Bruns has allowed just six earned runs in 25.0 innings.
Humberto Aranda had another strong day at the plate, going 4-for-5 with a run scored and season-high-tying four RBI.
David Walker,
Garrett Jeffries,
Michael Pomeroy, and
Brian Kraft each had two hits on the day, while
Chad De La Guerra and
Matt Haggerty scored three runs apiece.
"Garrett has always been a very disciplined hitter, and he is not going to come out of the strike zone," Stankiewicz said. "It doesn't surprise me that he had a good weekend. Humberto is ultra-aggressive, but he can also get himself into some hitter's counts. He is swinging the bat pretty well and we are going to need that as we enter the middle and latter part of the season."
The game had a similar feel to yesterday's contest, as GCU jumped out to a quick lead before the Cougars scored some of their own. However, a big six-run seventh inning cemented the win.
GCU got three runs on the board in the first inning after loading the bases, all with two outs. A wild pitch allowed De La Guerra to score, while Aranda's two-run double off the left field wall plated Haggerty and Jeffries.
The Lopes tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the second after drawing back-to-back walks to open the frame. An error on the pitcher allowed one run to score, while
Ben Mauseth plated two with a single into right field. Aranda's single to left field scored the fourth run of the frame.
Chicago State scored four runs over the next two frames while GCU added two of their own. The Cougars scored again in the top of the sixth to pull within four runs at 9-5.
Paul Panaccione opened the bottom of the seventh with a single up the middle and moved to third on De La Guerra's double down the left field line. Haggerty was hit by a pitch to load the bases, after which Jeffries drew a walk to score Panaccione with the first run of the inning. Three consecutive singles by Aranda, Pomeroy, and
Brandon Smith tacked on four more runs still with no outs on the board.
Walker put an end to the game with a single to left field that scored Pomeroy with the final run.
"In that last inning, we committed to hit the ball up the middle," added Stankiewicz. "The guys put together quality at-bats to finish it off."
GCU will now travel to Reno, Nev., for a two-game, non-conference series against Nevada beginning tomorrow night at 6 p.m. Fans can find links to follow the action live by visiting
