The Grand Canyon University baseball team (14-11, 5-1 WAC) is coming off of their first series sweep of the 2014 season and heads up to Reno, Nev., for a two-game, non-conference series at Nevada (12-12, 6-6 MWC) beginning tonight at 6 p.m. The Antelopes have won four straight games, while the Wolf Pack are winners in three of their last four. THE LAST SERIESThe Antelopes got their first series sweep of the 2014 season with three Western Athletic Conference wins over Chicago State at Brazell Stadium this past weekend. GCU came from behind in the series opener to win 2-1 in 11 innings, while they outscored the Cougars 27-11 over the final two games. Humberto Aranda (.600, 8 RBI) and Garrett Jeffries (.667, 5 runs) led GCU's offense, while Coley Bruns tossed his third complete game in a row in Sunday's series finale, a game that was called in the seventh inning due to the WAC's 10-run rule (15-5).
BRUNS GETTING IT DONEColey Bruns is 5-0 in six starts (seven appearances) this season for the 'Lopes, allowing just 12 earned runs in 46.0 innings for a 2.35 ERA. He has struck out a team-best 38 batters. Opponents are hitting .223 against the right-hander, who has issued just 9 walks. Bruns has tossed three straight complete games, allowing just 6 earned runs over 25.0 innings of work.
WALKER GETTING ON BASEDavid Walker leads the team with a .474 on-base percentage and is batting at a .362 clip (34-for-94) in 25 games. He also leads the 'Lopes with 11 multi-hit affairs and has currently hit safely in 12 of his last 13 games (21-for-51, .412). He currently leads all WAC players with 11 stolen bases. Walker was named WAC Hitter of the Week on March 10.
ARANDA HAVING HIS WAYHumberto Aranda is batting .421 (24-for-57) in 17 games for GCU, including 13 starts behind the plate. He has 10 runs, a team-best 6 doubles, a triple, home run, and 17 RBI. Aranda boasts a .614 slugging. He hit safely in a seven of his last eight games (17-for-32, .531) and has thrree 4-hit affairs on the season. He recorded 8 RBI in the three-game series against Chicago State.
DE LA GUERRA WITH THE BATSecond baseman Chad De La Guerra is batting .300 (30-for-100) in 25 games with 6 doubles, a triple, home run, and 15 RBI. De La Guerra has collected a hit in 19 of his 25 games and hit safely in nine straight from March 1-18 (11-for-35, .314). His eight multi-hit games are second only to David Walker (11) on the team.
AS A STAFFGCU's starting pitchers have combined to toss 171.2 innings in 25 starts compared to 129.0 innings for opponents' starters. Jorge Perez and Andrew Naderer lead the staff with 49.2 and 49.0 innings, respectively. 'Lopes starters have collected 120 strikeouts while issuing just 32 walks as opponents are batting .243.
FROM THE TOPThe 1-2-3 spots in GCU's batting order have been very productive so far this season, combining for a .300 batting average (90-for-300) with 40 RBI and 56 runs scored. David Walker has hit leadoff for the 'Lopes in all 25 games, while Chad De La Guerra has split time between the second and third spots. The top-three spots have also combined for 29 stolen bases this year.
WHAT A RELIEFGCU relievers Trent Wilson, Zebastian Valenzuela, Scott Serigstad, and Joey Wise have combined for 24.1 innings of relief this season. That group has struck out 16 batters. Serigstad leads the relief pitchers with 9.1 innings out of the bullpen, and has converted two saves in as many opportunities. Serigstad has struck out five batters and has allowed just one extra-base hit. He picked up his first-career win against Arizona on March 18. Wilson got his first save of the season on March 29 versus Chicago State.
THE DESIGNATED HITTERThe designated hitter position for GCU has hit .305 (11-for-36) this season, including an impressive .533 clip (8-for-15) from Garrett Jeffries in 7 games.
