Down nine early in the second half, Grand Canyon rallied to win its first Western Athletic Conference road game, 66-63, over Utah Valley at UCCU Center in Orem, Utah Thursday.
The Antelopes (16-6, 5-4) outscored the Wolverines 18-8 in the first 10 minutes of the second period and took the lead for good, 46-45, on two
Deanna Daniels free throws with 9:55 remaining. GCU led by as much as eight, 55-47, and hung on down the stretch by getting key buckets from
August Touchard – a 3-pointer -- and
Johnna Brown.
"It was a hard-fought win tonight that we needed," said GCU coach Trent May. "Utah Valley gave us a fight and made us work for everything."
Brown had her fifth double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds. During the early second-half rally, senior guard
Justine Johnson scored 11 straight points, nine coming on three 3-pointers. Johnson finished with 14 points. As a team, GCU hit 7-of-16 3-point attempts (43.8 percent).
Utah Valley (4-18, 1-8) went on a 25-8 run and led 37-28 after scoring the first field goal of the second half. The Antelopes had an eight-point first-half lead, 20-12, with 9:06 to go.
Kaitlyn Petersen had 14 points and eight assists.
After GCU took a 55-47 lead with 6:05 to go, Utah Valley cut it to one, 57-56 with 3:48 remaining. Touchard cooled the crowd with a 3-pointer to pump GCU's lead back to four, 60-56. When the Wolverines cut it to two again, 62-60 at the 1:09 mark, Brown scored the next three, hitting one-of-two free throws and then a lay-up with just 19 seconds to go.
"Our girls made some timely plays down the stretch and hit big 3's in the second half," added May. "We had a great assist-to-turnover (18-7) ratio."
