Grand Canyon had four players score in double figures but it wasn't quite enough in a 77-70 Western Athletic Conference loss to Bakersfield at Icardo Center Saturday.
The Roadrunners (13-8, 7-2) in second place in the WAC led from start to finish. Grand Canyon (16-7, 5-5) cut the Bakersfield lead to two, 50-48, with 14:20 to go on a three-point play by freshman
August Touchard, but was unable to get closer or take an advantage.
Touchard finished with a career-high 12, including 3-for-5 from three-point range.
Kaitlyn Petersen led the Antelopes with 20 points, 10 in each half. She hit 7-for-13 from the field and 4-for-7 from beyond the arc.
Deanna Daniels added 18 and eight rebounds.
Johnna Brown scored 12 and had a team-high nine boards. Petersen had seven assists. Daniels also had four assists and two steals.
GCU rallied from a 16-point first-half deficit. With hot-shooting from the perimeter from Touchard and Petersen, GCU was able to cut a 31-15 game to 33-28. The Antelopes shot 47.4 percent (27-for-57) for the game and hit eight 3-pointers, but were out-shot by 10 makes and 16 attempts at the free-throw line. GCU was 8-for-9 at the stripe while Bakersfield was 18-for-25. The 'Runners out-rebounded the 'Lopes 38-29 and had 16 offensive rebounds.
"If you look at the stat sheet you will see a lot of good things in most categories," said GCU coach Trent May. "However, in the free-throw category they shot and made too many. In close games, you can't keep sending your opponent to the free-throw line.
"Discipline was extremely important in this tough-fought game. We had great effort, but we needed the mental toughness, too."
Bakersfield's Tyonna Outland led all scorers with 21.
GCU is off until a Feb. 20 game with Seattle U at GCU Arena.
