Grand Canyon won a pair of matches and was in the mix in a number of others in Monday afternoon's 26-6 loss to No. 25 Stanford, ranked as high as No. 15 earlier in the year, at Antelope Gymnasium.
"We're close, but we're not there yet against the good Division I programs," said GCU coach R.C. LaHaye, whose club is 11-5 in dual meets. "We're close and closing the gap."
Grand Canyon picked up back-to-back wins at 141 and 149. Zach Zehner earned GCU's first win to keep his record unblemished at 11-0. The transfer from Tomahawk, Wisc, and the University of Wyoming was added to the GCU roster at the semester. He recorded a 5-2 victory over Peter Russo. At 149, Mike Hamel – who also came to GCU from Wyoming -- got his team-best 26th win with a 4-2 victory over Donovan Halpin.
"They're experienced Division I wrestlers and we expect them to win regardless of who we're wrestling," said LaHaye.
The Antelopes were on the short end of five matches decided by three points or less. At heavyweight, Peter Anguiano was taken down in the latter seconds of overtime in an 8-6 loss to Josh Marchok. Anguiano got an escape point in the third period to tie the match, 5-5. He had an escape and a takedown in the second period.
In the opening match at 125 between two true freshmen, GCU's AJ Salazar lost 4-1 to Tommy Pawelski. Salazar got a quick escape to open the third period to cut the deficit to 2-1, but his takedown move ended in a stalemate. Pawelski got a last-second takedown for the final margin.
Bryant Wood returned to the GCU lineup at 157 and lost a close 5-2 decision to Stanford's Peter Galli. At 197, against No. 18 Dan Scherer, GCU's Marcus Haughian lost 3-0. At 174, Martin Fabbian lost 2-0 to Kyle Meyer.
"We have to find a way to win the close matches," added LaHaye. "We were in some matches at the very end. If we find a way to win those, it's a close dual meet.
