Grand Canyon concluded play at the Hillenbrand Invitational Sunday in Tucson, Ariz., dropping a mid-day affair to No. 24 Arizona by a final of 5-0. Sunday's contest marked as the second time the two teams squared off during the invitational, as the undefeated Wildcats also held the Antelopes scoreless Thursday night on their way to a 5-0 victory. The 'Lopes push their record to 4-7 on the season after Sunday's loss.
"We didn't string anything together at the plate and because of that were unable to score today," said head coach Ann Pierson.
Kayla Henry had a big day at the plate for GCU, going a perfect 3-for-3 in the box.
Nicole Newbury also had a multi-hit performance, finishing 2-for-3.
Freshmen
Camree Wartman and
Kylie Shull both picked up a hit.
Taylor Nowlin suffered the loss in the circle, giving up five runs in three innings of work.
Kailey Regester came in and shutout Arizona in the final three innings, allowing only one hit and striking out one. The sophomore was very impressive over the weekend against the Cats, not allowing a run and giving up just one hit in a combined 6.2 innings of relief.
Regester went 2-0 over the weekend, moving her record to 3-0 in 2014.
"We need to have a great week of practice in preparation for our invitational next weekend," concluded Pierson.
