For the second straight night, Grand Canyon had second-set chances to tie its match with No. 1 Loyola Chicago, but the Antelopes lost in extra points and dropped the match 3-0 at Antelope Gymnasium Saturday.
GCU (6-7, 0-4) lost its Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association match to Loyola (11-1, 4-0) by set scores of 25-12, 26-24, 25-12. On Friday, GCU had four set-points in the second, before losing in extra points 28-26 and falling 3-0.
"The second set was there for the taking, but we didn't take advantage of it," said GCU coach Jeremy Price. "We made plays early in the set, but they're a good team with a lot of fire power and they showed that tonight."
A Gerrard Lipscombe kill gave GCU a 23-20 second-set lead, but the Ramblers followed with the next three points. GCU took a 24-23 lead on a kill by Connor Dougherty, but Loyola came up with another three-point run to end the set.
Lipscombe and Andrew Muys led GCU with eight kills each. Lipscombe hit .500 with just one error on 14 tries. He added four digs and two block assists.
"Gerrard Lipscombe showed what a competitor he is tonight and Andrew, after a tough first set, was more efficient in the second and third," said Price.
Middle blockers Connor Dougherty and Keaton Berry had efficient offensive matches for the second straight night. Both had five kills. Dougherty hit .571 with just one error on seven swings. He added two block assists. Berry hit .300 with two errors on 10 tries.
The Antelopes continue MIVA play next week with road matches Friday and Saturday at Ohio State. Both contests start at 5 p.m. Arizona Time. Fans can follow the match with live links at www.gculopes.com.
