The Grand Canyon University men's basketball team (3-4) returns home tonight for a game against NAIA's Great Falls (7-2). Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at GCU Arena. The Antelopes snapped a two-game losing streak with a win at UIC (66-61) on Tuesday. This game marks a stretch that has GCU paying 10 of its next 11 games at home. GREAT FALLSThis marks the first meeting between GCU and Great Falls. The Argos come into the game with a 7-2 record, with their most recent game being an 89-84 double-OT win over Montana State Billings. The Argos hail from the NAIA and competes in the Frontier Conference. The Argos were 18-13 last season and advanced to the Frontier Conference Tournament Semifinals. Great Falls is a combined 63-39 over the last three –plus seasons.
LAST TIME OUTGCU snapped a two-game skid with a 66-61 win over UIC in Chicago on Tuesday night. Ryan Majerle led all GCU scorers with 15 points and also had five rebounds. Kerwin Smith was a force inside, scoring 12 with four boards. All told, the Antelopes had seven players with seven or more points. The game saw four lead changes in the second half, with GCU pulling away late to secure their first road win of the season.
HARD WORK, WORKJerome Garrison over the past three games is starting to log minutes that will remind fans of last season when he led the WAC averaging 37.8 minutes per contest. Garrison has played 37, 37 and 38 minutes, respectively, in his last three games. In those games he is averaging 12.3 points per game and has committed only two turnovers.
STEPPING UPGCU's redshirt freshman Joshua Braun burst onto the scene with a 21-point seven-rebound effort against Central Michigan on Nov. 29. Braun also played a season-high 25 minutes in the game. He followed up that contest with seven points on Tuesday vs. UIC. Braun is no stranger to these types of performances as he averaged 18.5 points and 9.4 rebounds as a junior at Boulder Creek High School in Anthem, Ariz. He scored in double-digits in all 27 games that season and had 10 or more rebounds in 12 contests. His senior season, with Westwind Prep, was cut short due to injury.
ALL IN THE FAMILYRyan Majere, nephew of head coach Dan Majerle, is showing many of the same traits as his uncle did in his star-studded NBA career. Ryan, while predominantly coming off the bench, has scored in double digits in five of seven games and has averaged 6.0 rebounds in his last three games. He has led the team in scoring twice this season.
I SEE YOU, MR. SMITHKerwin Smith, a true freshman from Dallas, Tex., has earned the start in Lopes' last four games. In a road win over UIC, the big man was tough on the inside and scored 12 points and grabbed four rebounds over 24 minutes. The points and rebounds were career highs.
