Courtney Hayes drove, scored and added a free throw with 1:03 remaining to give Grand Canyon (2-4) the lead and the Antelopes hung on for a 59-57 victory over New Orleans at GCU Arena Wednesday.
New Orleans (0-4) answered Hayes's three-point play with a Yasmin Taylor putback with 15.9 to go and Antelope sophomore
Astrea Reed added one of two free throws for the final margin at the 10.1 mark. The Privateers' Taylor missed a long 3-pointer at the buzzer to end the game.
"When you lose close games -- and we've been close -- it's good to be to make the plays that give you the win versus the almost-plays that almost give you the win," said GCU coach Trent May.
Hayes scored five of GCU's final six points and led 11 Lopes in the scoring column with 12 points. She also had a team-high six rebounds, a pair of assists and one steal. Off the bench, Reed had nine.
Cheyenne Hedrington and
Mikaehla Connor each scored seven.
The game had 14 lead changes and eight ties. Both teams had the majority of points from the bench. The Antelopes had 35, while the Privateers scored 32.
"I'm proud of the effort," added May. "We've had good effort in all of our games. I'm proud of my coaching staff, the adjustments made put us in position to win the game."
Neither team had led by more than five until
Casey Rarrick, in her GCU debut, hit a 3-pointer to give the Lopes a 47-41 lead with 7:27 to go. It was Rarrick's first points as a Lope. GCU went up 49-41 on a layup by
Tori Morris, the 11th GCU player to score in the game at the 6:46 mark. It wrapped up a 10-0 GCU run, but the Privateers responded with an 8-0 flurry of their own.
New Orleans went on a 7-0 run late in the first half to take a 26-25 lead at the break. GCU hit 4-of-10 from 3-point range in the first 20 minutes and were led by Reed with six points, including 2-of-2 from long range.
