Grand Canyon's youthful women's basketball team gave No. 10 Louisville all it wanted before falling 65-51 at GCU Arena Thursday.
The Antelopes (3-7), who have no seniors and nine freshmen, outscored the Cardinals (10-1) 16-6 in the game's final 6:55.
Sophomore
August Touchard led GCU with 13 points. Sophomore center
Tori Morris had eight points, tying a career-best, and eight rebounds. Frosh
Jessica Gajewski and junior
Cheyenne Hedrington each had eight points.
"I'm super proud of my staff and their game-planning and I'm super proud of our players doing their best to execute that plan," said GCU coach Trent May.
After trailing early 6-0 and 8-2 and falling behind by as much as 12 in the first half, GCU outscored Louisville 11-7 in the final 7:27 of the first half and were down only eight, 32-24 at the break. Eight players scored in the first 20 minutes. Hedrington had five points and two steals. Morris had four points and five rebounds, including four offensive boards. The Lopes helped force 10 Louisville turnovers.
In the second half, Louisville went on an 11-0 run, while GCU had a 4:26 scoring draught. The Cardinals extended their lead during that time period to 24 points, 59-35. With the aide of 11 second-half points from Touchard, GCU was able to cut in to that deficit.
"Prior to the game we talked about toughness," said May. "Regardless of a win or loss, we wanted everyone that left the arena Thursday night to know we're tough and I think they proved the point that we're a tough team.
"Before you compete, you have to have that toughness in your DNA."
Touchard's five field goals tied for game-high honors with Louisville's Mariya Moore, who led all scorers with 17. Morris's eight rebounds were a game-high, as were her six free throws. Touchard also had a team-best three assists. Hedrington led in steals with two. Morris also had one blocked shot. Freshman
Casey Rarrick had a career-best six points, on two 3-pointers.
Added May, "We want to bring the best basketball to Phoenix that we can. I'm proud of our girls and how they represented the university in the fashion they did."
