Grand Canyon (5-6) is back in action tonight when they host fellow transitioning school Incarnate Word (6-1), tonight at GCU Arena in Phoenix. Tipoff is scheduled to 7 p.m. Cox7 will carry the television broadcast which can also be found on
www.cox7.com, beginning with their pregame show at 6:30 p.m. The game can be heard on radio on KXXT 1010 AM (also via the KXXT TuneIn Radio App), with GCU Alum Michael Potter calling the action alongside 'The Coach", Dan Nichols.
GAME NOTESVS. INCARNATE WORDDespite having both played at Division II, this marks the first meeting between GCU and Incarnate Word. The Cardinals bring a 6-1 record into the contest, coming off of a 74-73 upset at Nebraska on Dec. 10. UIW plays in the Southland Conference.
LAST TIME OUTGCU snapped their two-game skid with a 60-50 win over Bethune-Cookman on Monday at GCU Arena to open an eight-game homestand. Joshua Braun and DeWayne Russell led the Lopes with 13 points apiece, while Braun pulled down a season-best eight rebounds. GCU shot 42.0 percent from the floor (21-for-50) while holding the Wildcats to a 34.6 mark (18-for-52).
RUSSELL SHINING EARLYDeWayne Russell is averaging 14.5 points in two games since making his GCU debut on Dec. 13 at Indiana. He scored 16 points at Indiana and followed that up with 13 points in GCU's 60-50 win over Bethune-Cookman on Dec. 15. Russell had to sit out for a year after transferring from NAU, where he averaged 14.4 points in 32 games as a freshman in 2012-13.
HOME SWEET HOMEGCU's game against Bethune-Cookman on Dec. 15 was the first of eight consecutive contests at GCU Arena. The last time the Lopes had at least eight straight home games was during the 2011-12 season, when they welcomed eight different opponents from Nov. 16-Dec. 30. GCU went 7-1 during that stretch three seasons ago.
