Despite posting one of their best shooting nights of the season, the Grand Canyon University men's basketball team (5-7) dropped a thrilling 82-80 contest to visiting Incarnate Word (7-1) tonight at GCU Arena. The Antelopes shot 50.9 percent from the field (28-for-55) but were outscored 43-30 by the Cardinals over the final 20 minutes after leading for most of the game.
After trailing by as many as 13 points, the Cardinals cut GCU's lead to just one point (64-63) halfway through the second half following a 9-2 run that spanned over four minutes. UIW tied the score at 78 with 2:17 to play and went ahead 80-79 one minute later. A
Joshua Braun free throw notched the score at 80 with 42 seconds, but UIW scored on a jumper after taking 20 seconds off the clock. The Lopes put up three more shots before time expired but were unable to get one to fall.

Braun led the Lopes with a career-best 22 points on 8-for-11 shooting.
DeWayne Russell added a GCU-best 20 points, while
Jerome Garrison was also in double figures with 16 points.
UIW shot 52.5 percent (21-for-61) for the game. GCU's percentage marked their third-best of the year, while the 80 points tied for their season-high.
GCU scored 50 points in the first half, their most in the first 20 minutes under head coach Dan Majerle's reign. That total is the fourth-most points in a half under Majerle, as they scored 54 points on three occasions last season.
After UIW led for the first eight minutes of the first half, the Lopes charged back to lead by as many as 11 points en route to scoring a season-best 50 first-half points, staking a 50-39 advantage at the break. GCU shot a blistering 70.4 percent (19-for-27) over the first 20 minutes, including a 7-for-9 (77.8 percent) mark from beyond the arc. Incarnate Word went 16-for-27 from the floor (59.3 percent) in the first half.
Braun had 12 points heading into the locker room to lead the team, while Russell added 10 points.
GCU was hampered by a 9-for-28 mark (32.1 percent) from the floor in the second half. For the game, the Cardinals held the 42-30 advantage in points in the paint.
