Behind a strong second half performance, the Grand Canyon University men's basketball team (5-6) picked up a 60-50 win over visiting Bethune-Cookman (3-8) tonight at GCU Arena to open their eight-game homestand. The Antelopes' defense limited the Wildcats to just a 7-for-25 mark (28.0 percent) from the floor over the final 20 minutes to secure the victory.

GCU was led by
Joshua Braun and
DeWayne Russell with 13 points apiece.
Kerwin Smith added seven points and seven rebounds, while Braun led the squad with a season-best eight boards on the night.
The Lopes shot 42.0 percent (21-for-50) for the game while holding B-CU to 34.6 percent (18-for-52). GCU pulled down 39 rebounds and forced 11 Wildcat turnovers. GCU held the 34-24 advantage in points in the paint and were sparked by 21 points from their bench, highlighted by eight points and five rebounds in 11 minutes from
Daniel Alexander.
Neither team led by more than six points in the first half as both shot over 40 percent. GCU went 12-for-26 (46.2 percent) over the first 20 minutes, while B-CU posted a 40.7 percent (11-for-27) mark of their own.
After the Lopes broke open a 26-20 advantage with 4:44 on the clock in the first half, the Wildcats scored eight of the next 11 points before time expired to pull within one point, 28-27, heading into the locker room.
Braun led the Lopes into the break with seven points, while Smith added five points and four rebounds.
After the opening minutes of the second half went back-and-forth, GCU used a 6-0 run spanning over three minutes to build a 43-34 lead with just over nine minutes to play. The Wildcats would eventually cut a 10-point GCU lead into three, but that is the closest they would come as the Lopes outscored B-CU 9-2 over the game's final three minutes.
GCU went 9-for-24 in the second half (37.5 percent), draining 14 of their 16 free throws on the night to pull away from the Wildcats.
