Grand Canyon opened its two-game road trip with a 66-47 loss to Northern Colorado at Bank of Colorado Arena in Greeley, Colo., Wednesday.
Against the Bears, the Antelopes were out-rebounded 40-23. The hosts shot 47.1 percent from the field to GCU's 32.6.
Off the bench, sophomore guard
August Touchard led the way for the Antelopes. She had 12 points, including nine in the second half. Freshman
Jessica Gajewski had nine points.
A free throw from freshman
Mikaehla Connor and a layup from frosh
Arin Perry, getting her first collegiate start, gave GCU a 7-4 first-half lead with 15:03 to go, but the Bears followed with the next nine points to take a 13-7 lead. UNC led the rest of the way. Baskets by Gajewski and frosh center
Eliza Martinez each cut the margin to two, but the Lopes were unable to either tie or get over the hump. After a Perry free throw and Gajewski layup the Lopes cut it to 19-18 with 6:30 remaining in the half. Again, the Bears followed with a 7-0 run.
Northern Colorado was led by 6-1 senior center Stephanie Lee, who led all scorers with 32 points. She had 17 in the second half and was 12-of-22 for the game from the field.
Martinez led GCU rebounders with four. Junior guard
Courtney Hayes had a team-high three assists. Gajewski had two steals.
"The game is always about the little things," said GCU coach Trent May. "You do those well and the game becomes easier. Tonight was difficult as we didn't do enough of the little things. We'll get back at it and prepare for the next one."
The Antelopes dropped to 2-6 on the season, while the Bears improved to 6-2. GCU goes to Tulsa, Okla., Friday to take on Oral Roberts. Fans can follow action with live links at
