Grand Canyon (3-6) finished the game on a 13-3 run and split its two-game road trip with a 54-51 victory over Oral Roberts (5-5) at Mabee Center in Tulsa, Okla., Friday.
Jessica Gajewski scored half of her team-high 14 points in the final 1:19 and
Tori Morris helped clinch the contest with a pair of clutch free throws with only 2.5 seconds left on the clock.
"A great team win," said GCU coach Trent May. "The girls really stuck together and found a way. They made the necessary plays, did the little things and competed. I'm proud of our resolve."
GCU was down 48-41 with 3:17 remaining. Gajewski hit a 3-pointer to cut it to 51-50 with :56 to go and added a pair of free throws with :16.2 left to give the Lopes a 52-51 lead. ORU missed a pair of opportunities on the offensive end and Morris grabbed a rebound and drew a foul. The sophomore center finished with career highs in points (eight) and rebounds (10).
Madison Craig tied her career high with four 3-pointers and was one point shy of equaling her career best. She scored 12. She had six points, on two treys, during an 8-0 run in the second half that gave GCU a 39-37 lead.
The game had 12 lead changes and four ties.
The Antelopes were 9-of-25 from 3-point range (36 percent), while the Golden Eagles hit just 2-of-20 (10 percent). GCU out-rebounded the much-taller ORU club, 49-45. Golden Eagles 6-7 senior center Vicky McIntyre had a triple-double with 14 points, 16 rebounds and 10 blocked shots.
Two
August Touchard treys gave GCU a 31-28 lead early in the second half, but the Golden Eagles rallied with a 9-0 run to lead 37-31.
A solid first half saw the Lopes take a 25-24 lead into intermission. Craig hit back-to-back three-pointers giving GCU leads at 22-21 and 25-23. Gajewski led the Lopes at the break with seven points.
Courtney Hayes had four assists on GCU's 10 first-half field goals.
Hayes finished with six assists and
Cheyenne Hedrington grabbed seven rebounds.
Grand Canyon returns to action at GCU Arena on Thursday with a contest against No. 10 Louisville. The game starts at 7 p.m. and fans that can't make it out can watch locally on Cox7.
