Madison Craig scored a career-high for the second straight day, but it wasn't quite enough for the Lopes in a 60-51 loss to Navy in the Navy Classic at Alumni Hall in Annapolis, Md., Saturday.
Craig, who was selected to the Navy Classic All-Tournament Team, scored 13 points. She had 12 on Friday. It was her first back-to-back double-figure scoring games of her career. The Lopes fall to 1-4. Navy, a WNIT team a year ago, improved to 4-3.
Cheyenne Hedrington broke a first-half tie with the opening bucket of the second half to give GCU a 32-30 lead, but Navy answered with an 8-0 run to take the lead for good. In the first half, the Antelopes trailed 10-6 and followed with a 9-0 run. Baskets by
Jessica Gajewski and Hedrington tied it 10-10. Craig found
Courtney Hayes on a fastbreak for two. Hayes was fouled and added the free throw for a 13-10 advantage.
Zelor Massaquoi wrapped up the nine-point flurry with a field goal to give GCU a 15-10 lead.
GCU had an 8-0 run later in the first half to take its biggest lead, 28-19. Hayes,
Eliza Martinez, Craig and Gajewski all scored, but Navy found a way to tie the game, 30-30, by halftime.
Gajewski was the only other GCU double-figure scorer with 10. Hedrington had 10 rebounds and eight points. Hayes had a career-best eight assists to go with seven points and two steals.
Mikaehla Connor had seven rebounds.
Grand Canyon out-rebounded Navy 44-32. Navy outscored GCU 14-4 at the free-throw line. From the field, GCU shot 34.9 percent (22-63) and Navy connected on 40.8 percent (20-49).
Playing 40 minutes is a learning process right now," said GCU coach Trent May, whose club includes nine freshmen and no seniors. "Good things are happening and we need to sustain those times. Mental mistakes and fatigue can only be excuses for so long."
