In a five-set heartbreaker, Grand Canyon (11-6, 1-3) lost 3-2 to Kansas City (12-3, 1-0) in the Western Athletic Conference home opener at Antelope Gymnasium Thursday.
GCU lost by set scores of 27-29, 25-16, 30-32, 25-23, 15-8.
The Antelopes won two marathon sets, battling through 11 ties and four lead changes in the first and 10 ties and five lead changes in the third. Three players recorded double-doubles. Freshman outside hitter
Natalie Tardy had a match-best 22 kills and added 13 digs. Senior outside hitter
Shannon Dugan had 11 kills and 17 digs. Sophomore setter
Leigh Stonerook had 48 assists and 11 digs, both were career highs for the Montana State transfer.
"We battled and competed for four sets, but when you play five, you have to turn it up a notch and we didn't do that tonight," said GCU coach Kris Naber. "How we competed in the first four sets is the standard we need to hold for this program and each player."

Mackenzie Phelps had a match-best 28 digs. GCU had more service aces, 6-5, led by
Hannah Hankins with three.
Megan Byrnes added 10 kills.
Hannah Hicks had five block assists.
In the first set, GCU trailed 23-20 before a service ace from Stonerook and two Tardy kills tied the match. The Antelopes staved off a match point and wrapped it up on back-to-back kills from Dugan and Tardy. The Lopes rallied after being down by as much as five, 19-14, in the set.
In the third set, it was the 'Roos that rallied to force extra points. Down the stretch, GCU battled through three set points, while the visitors stopped four. At 30-30, Dugan gave GCU the lead, while a combo block from Hicks and Tardy gave GCU a 2-1 lead.
There were six ties and three lead changes in the fourth. GCU had its last lead at 20-19. Kansas City scored the first six points and seven of the first eight in the fifth. GCU got within two, 9-7, but no closer.
The Antelopes play host to Chicago State 1 p.m. Saturday at Antelope Gymnasium.
