With still 14 matches remaining, Grand Canyon equaled its win total from its initial Division I season in 2013 with an impressive 3-0 (25-13, 30-28, 25-16) win over visiting Chicago State Saturday at Antelope Gymnasium.
The Antelopes are 12-6 overall and 2-3 in the Western Athletic Conference. Chicago State dropped to 6-10 and 0-3.
"We executed today," said GCU coach Kris Naber. "Our game plan was to compete and battle and we did that. We put pressure on Chicago State and in the second set we showed great composure after we lost some focus. That's when the battling came in."
There were 17 ties in the second set. The win marked the third straight extra-points set that GCU has won. The Lopes are 5-2 in extra-points sets this season.
"We talked in the locker room about raising our level when it gets 22-22," said Naber. "We made adjustments, but our composure was the biggest thing. We stayed aggressive.
Natalie Tardy had the last three swings and they were smart and aggressive."
Freshman outside hitter Tardy had a match-best 16 kills, five came in the second set. Senior outside hitter
Shannon Dugan added 13 kills, 18 digs, a pair of service aces and a solo block. Libero
Mackenzie Phelps had 18 digs. Middle blocker
Hannah Hankins had seven kills. Frosh blocker
Hannah Hicks had four kills and a match-best five blocks. Setter
Leigh Stonerook had 37 assists. Frosh defensive specialist
Emily Vitel added nine digs.
"I'm really proud of the girls," added Naber. "Coming off a rough week last week, we made a lot of strides this week; even in the loss against Kansas City we played solid for four sets."
GCU was 71 percent on sideouts and led in kills (45-31), aces (3-1), digs (58-50) and blocks (9-5). The Antelopes are 4-0 all-time against Chicago State.
Grand Canyon continues WAC play with a Saturday 1 p.m. contest at Bakersfield.
