Grand Canyon University head track and field coach Tom Flood has announced the 2015 men's recruiting class. The men are coming off an inaugural Division I season in which they finished second at the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Indoor Championships.
"I am really excited to announce our men's track & field recruits for the 2015 season," said Flood. "We lost some very talented seniors last year, their talent and leadership will be tough to replace, but the signees in this class are also very talented and they will help us continue to be very successful at the Conference and National levels."
Isaac Allanarem, a graduate of the Desert Edge High School, joins the GCU track and field family after being a member of 4x400-meter relay teams that placed second (2013) and fifth (2014) at the Arizona Division II State Championships. Allanarem's top time in the 400-meter dash is 49.07 seconds...Coach Flood on Allanarem, "Another true freshman with a lot of untapped potential. Isaac is a relative newcomer to Track & Field and should improve rapidly training with our quarter milers!"
Mykeal Ham comes to GCU from Westwood High School where he raced to a runner-up finish in the 400-meter dash at the Arizona Division I State Championships. The Mesa native has personal bests of 48.47 seconds in the 400-meter dash and 22.24 in the 200-meter dash…Coach Flood on Ham, "Excited to have Mykeal in our Track & Field program. Was one of the top 400 meter runners in the state last year and he demonstrates a great work ethic and a desire to get better. Look for him to make an immediate impact at the Conference meet."
Milan Howard was the 2014 Northwest Regional 110-meter hurdle champion after crossing the line in a school record time of 14.9 seconds. He also ran to school record times in the 60-meter hurdles (8.6 seconds) and 300-meter hurdles (39.05 seconds)…Coach Flood on Howard, "Yet another true freshman with a huge upside. Milan is a very talented youngster that should score right away in both hurdle races at the Conference meet."
Matthew Jackson, who is also a member of the GCU cross country team, previously competed for Gillette College, where he received the Coaches All-American Award after recording a time of 15:22 in the 5K competition. He was named Team Academic All-American of the Year for indoor track during the 2012-13 season. Jackson took third at the Wyoming Cross Country State Championships and helped Cheyenne East High School to the 2011 Men's Indoor State Track and Field Championship…Coach Flood on Jackson, "A junior college All-American that has already made an impact during Cross Country season. Matthew brings some much needed depth to our distance events."
Timmy Johnson, a native of Canby, Ore., was a state qualifier in four events while at Canby High School. In addition, he was a three-time Junior Olympic All-American and qualified for the Junior Nationals in the decathlon his junior year. His fastest time in the 110-meter hurdles is 14.66 seconds and furthest leap in the long jump is 22'1''. He also scored 6,594 points in the decathlon competition…Coach Flood on Johnson, "Another truly talented true freshman that should score in a lot of different events for us at the Conference meets. We feel very fortunate to have him in our Track & Field program."
Austin Lutterloh, a graduate of Tacoma Baptist High School, was the 2014 state champion in the 300-meter hurdles (38.44 seconds) and was a member of 4x400-meter relay teams (2012 & 2014) that garnered first-place at the state championships. The Puyallup, Wash., native was a Junior Olympic National Qualifier in the 400-meter dash (2011) and the 400-meter hurdles (2014)…Coach Flood on Lutterloh, "Austin is a very talented hurdler and should make an immediate impact at the Conference meet, especially in the 400 meter hurdles as a true freshman."
Jude Olear joins the Canyon track and field program after competing for West LA Community College. Olear finished ninth at the Junior College State Meet in California. He has personal bests of 22' in the long jump and 46'3.25'' in the triple jump…Coach Flood on Olear, "A junior college transfer jumper that we feel is a definite diamond in the rough. Has the size and the talent to make a lot of noise in both horizontal jumps at the Conference meets this year."
Anthony Phelps Jr., who prepped at Deer Valley High School, was the state champion in the 300-meter hurdles at the 2014 Arizona Division II State Championships. Phelps was a two-time Western Region champion in the 300-meter hurdles and holds the school record in the same event (37.94 seconds). His fastest time in the 200-meter dash is 22.18 seconds…Coach Flood on Phelps, "A very talented true freshman that has the whole coaching staff excited. Has the athletic ability to battle for Conference titles in both hurdle races in his first collegiate season."
Timothy Ryan hails from Granbury, Tex., where he recorded a top finish in the pole vault at the state meet his junior year and also turned in a pair of second-place finishes in the same event during his sophomore and senior seasons. He also placed fourth in the high jump (6'4'') and fifth (21' 2.5'') in the long jump his junior year. His top mark in the pole vault is 15'0'' and fastest time in the 110-meter hurdles is 15.61 seconds…Coach Flood on Ryan, "Another extremely gifted multi-event true freshman that will make his presence felt at the Conference meets right away. The two Timmy's (Ryan and Johnson) give us a very talented one/two punch in the Heptathlon/Decathlon."
Philip Terry, from Amarillo, Tex., was a member of the Randall High School 4x400-meter team that took third at the state championships. Terry has clocked a personal best time of 48.31 seconds in the 400-meter dash…Coach Flood on Terry, "Talented true freshman from the sprint rich state of Texas. We are excited to have Philip in our program and will look for to score at the Conference level right away in the 400 meters and battle for a spot on our 4x400m relay."
Aaron Thurber comes to GCU via Glendale Community College where he posted personal record times of 10.60 seconds in the 100-meter dash and 21.23 seconds in the 200-meter dash…Coach Flood on Thurber, "A very talented junior college transfer that we are very excited about. We will look for Aaron to help continue our dominant success in the sprints and relays."
Austin Tilley, a native of Henderson, Nev., comes to GCU after finishing second at the Nevada State Championships in the pole vault. Tilley also holds the school record at Basic High School in the pole vault after clearing 15'2'' during his prep career…Coach Flood on Tilley, "Austin is a very talented Pole Vaulter that should battle for the Conference title as a true freshman."
"As with our women's recruiting class, our focus was to bring in the most talented student-athletes we could find and to also add some much needed depth to our track and field program," said Flood. "I feel we accomplished both of our goals with this year's recruiting class. We can't wait for the season to begin."
