Grand Canyon, ranked No. 1 in the National Collegiate Wrestling Association, won the NCWA Collegiate Cup at Dalton, Ga., Saturday.
The Antelopes won six duals over two days, taking the championship over Shorter College, 23-19. Prior to the match against Shorter, GCU had lost only one individual match in five duals. The title contest came down to the last match. Peter Anguiano won by major decision to break a 19-19 tie.
"A great effort over the past two days for our guys," said GCU coach R.C. LaHaye. "I feel we let down a little in the finals but a lot of that was attributed to Shorter wrestling well, hats off to them.
"It was a good weekend overall and a great experience for our guys."
Along with winning the Cup, GCU picked up 24 points to be attributed to the NCWA Championships at the end of the season. Shorter earned 23 points. The point-system is based on the number of teams (24) that competed in the Collegiate Cup.
Grand Canyon is ineligible due to the four-year transitioning period from moving from Division II to Division I to compete in NCAA Championships. The NCWA provides post season opportunities to programs in similar situations and those colleges and universities that don't have programs at the NCAA level.
