In the Western Athletic Conference opener for both squads, Grand Canyon's women's basketball team lost to host Texas-Pan American 60-58 in Edinburg, Tex., Thursday.
GCU dropped to 11-3 overall and 0-1 in the WAC. UTPA improved to 7-7 and 1-0.
It was the first-ever WAC game for both programs.
The Antelopes played without leading scorer
Judy Jones, out for the season with a torn ACL, and injured starters
Johnna Brown and
Justine Johnson.
They were replaced in the starting lineup by
Jenna Pearson,
Astrea Reed and
Asha McDonnell. All three were getting their initial start of the season. It was the first career start for Reed.
Kaitlyn Petersen and
Deanna Daniels were the only regulars in the starting lineup.
"I love these girls and am proud of each one of them," said GCU coach Trent May. "There are times in a season that you learn from tough lessons and tonight is one of those times. We will regroup and be ready for our next opportunity."
The Antelopes rallied back from a 13-point deficit and took a brief second-half lead. McDonnell tied a school record with five blocked shots and led the team with a season-best 17 points, just one shy of her career-high, an 18-point performance against BYU-Hawai'i last season. She was 8-for-13 from the field and added eight rebounds. It was the eighth time a GCU player has had five blocks in a game. The last time was Feb. 14, 2009 by Jackie Stevens against Notre Dame de Namur.
Petersen had 15 points and seven assists. Daniels had eight points, nine rebounds and two steals.
Down 53-41 in the second half, GCU scored 14 straight. McDonnell and Petersen had four each during the run. Daniels, Reed and
Jasmine Grayson had two each. Two Grayson free throws gave GCU a 55-53 lead.
Grand Canyon trailed by 13, 37-24 at halftime. Petersen had eight points. All 10 available players saw at least three minutes of action in the first 20 minutes.
