Grand Canyon suffered its second straight heartbreaking loss in Western Athletic Conference play, dropping a 66-63 contest to New Mexico State at the Pan American Center in Las Cruces, N.M., Saturday.
The Antelopes fell to 11-4 overall and 0-2 in the WAC. New Mexico State is 4-10 and 1-0 in the league. GCU dropped a 60-58 decision at Texas Pan-American Thursday.
A three-point play by
Johnna Brown gave GCU a 62-59 lead, its biggest of the game, with 1:43 left. The Aggies tied the game, 63-63, with 1:03 to go on a jumper by Danesia Williamson. She added two free throws with 36 seconds left to give New Mexico State the lead for good.
"The team is still battling and learning to play in adverse situations," said GCU coach Trent May. "We are close and we are going to get there, but it will take everyone and we will need a smarter and tougher mentality.
"Composure will be paramount to our success."
The Antelopes scored the first six points of the second half, two on a field goal from Brown and four on two buckets from
Deanna Daniels to take a 31-30 lead. New Mexico State regained the lead on the next basket and led until Brown's late three-point play.
Daniels had 17 points and a career-best 15 rebounds.
Kaitlyn Petersen led GCU in scoring with 19 points, 15 coming in the second half. Freshman
Astrea Reed had a career-high 10 points. Brown had nine points and seven rebounds in her return to the Antelope lineup.
Both teams had their share of first-half runs. The Aggies jumped out to a 9-0 lead before the Antelopes scored the next nine. After New Mexico State went up 20-9, GCU cut it back to 22-20. At halftime, the Aggies led 30-25. Reed had already reached her career-high at the break with seven. Daniels led GCU at the half with eight points and six rebounds.
Williamson led all scorers with 23.
GCU will have its first home WAC games next week. It hosts Bakersfield Thursday at 7 and Utah Valley Saturday at 2.
