Grand Canyon (3-2) split matches Saturday and went 2-1 in two days of competition in Irvine, Calif.
On Saturday, GCU defeated Springfield College, the NCAA Division III national champion last season, 3-0. The Antelopes lost 3-2 to host Concordia, last year's NAIA champ. On Friday, GCU beat Concordia 3-2.
"It was a really good weekend for us, not just to win two out of three, but everyone on our roster got in and a lot of guys got extensive time," said GCU coach Jeremy Price. "We had 18 guys play (14 different starters Saturday) competitive volleyball under pressure and, for the most part, play well."
The Antelopes beat Springfield 26-24, 25-16, 25-23 and lost 20-25, 25-18, 25-14, 24-26, 15-8 to Concordia.
Grand Canyon had to come from behind in two of three sets in the win over Springfield. They wrapped up the third set by scoring the final four points.
Down 23-21,
Robbie Brannick and
Bob Houser had back-to-back kills to tie it. Following a Springfield attack error, Houser finished the contest with his match-best 14th kill.
In the opening set, GCU trailed 18-9. It rallied to tie it at 20-20, led 23-22 and thwarted a set-point at 24-23. A Houser-
Sean Saxton block gave the Antelopes their first lead of the afternoon, 23-22. They scored the final three points to win the opening set. Houser had a kill. Springfield had an attack error and Brannick and Saxton combined for a block.
Brannick filled the stat sheet with nine kills, six digs, four block assists and four service aces.
Andrew Muys had seven kills and six digs. Saxton had a match-best five block assists. Setter
Tanner Maxwell finished with 27 assists.
Aquiles Montoya added four block assists.
Team-wise, GCU had one of its best serving games of the season with seven aces and only nine service errors. The Antelopes won the battle of blocks (9.5-5), digs (29-25), kills (36-32) and hitting percentage (.266-.143).
Against Concordia,
Erik Jansen had a match-best 17 kills to go with three block assists and two service ace.
Connor Dougherty had 10 kills with no errors on 15 attempts (.667) and tied his career-high, set Friday, with nine block assists.
Ben Ponnet and
Gerrard Lipscombe each had 10 kills. Lipscombe added two service aces, eight digs and was part of four blocks, including one solo.
Keith Smithhad 49 assists, seven digs and four block assists. Libero
Jared Morrison had nine digs and Maxwell had two service aces.
Keaton Berry added six kills on 10 swings with just one error (.500) and two block assists.
GCU had a match-point in the fourth. A Jansen kill tied the set, 23-23. He followed with an ace for a 24-23 lead, but the Eagles were able to get the last three points.
"We didn't play well in the fourth, but crawled back in it and couldn't convert," said Price. "They played very well in the fifth."
In the third set, GCU hit .600 with 15 kills on 25 attempts with no errors. The Antelopes had 20 attack errors, 18 came in the three sets lost. For the match, GCU led in service aces (9-4) and blocks (12-6). Concordia had more kills (57-56), digs (37-32) and a better hitting percentage (.308-.295).
"Though the weekend ended in a loss, we learned some things," said Price. "We know, coming into conference season, we have to be good two nights in a row.
The Antelopes, after playing their first five matches on the road, will open their home season with matches Friday, Saturday and Sunday next week at Antelope Gym.
GCU takes on George Mason Friday and Saturday (6 p.m./4 p.m.) and Hope International on Sunday (3 p.m.).
"With five matches on the road, four true road matches and one neutral, we're looking forward to coming home to Antelope Gym and playing in front of some good home crowds next weekend," said Price.
