Grand Canyon fell to 7-7 on the season and 1-2 in the Western Athletic Conference with a 3-0 loss to the University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho Monday.
The Antelopes fell by set scores of 26-24, 25-18, 25-23.
Against the Vandals,
Kaitlynn Ausmus had a match-best 16 kills, hit .278 (16-6-36) and had nine digs. Freshman setter
Bree Davis had a team-high 18 assists to go with three kills. Senior middle blocker
Lanie Muys had nine kills and six digs. Junior libero
Mackenzie Phelps tied for match-high in digs with 13.
It was the first time GCU has lost and not forced a fourth or fifth set. In the third after a Muys kill, GCU led 17-14. The Vandals came back and tied it at 21-21 and took the lead for good 22-21, though the Antelopes staved off a pair of match points.
Idaho scored 11 of the final 16 points of the second set, pulling away from a back-and-forth set that saw nine ties and seven lead changes.
On an Idaho service error, GCU had a first-set set point, but the Vandals finished with the final three points.
"We had opportunities to win the first and third set and didn't capitalize when we needed to," said GCU coach Kris Naber. "Idaho played consistent throughout the match and when the set got to the 20s, they played to win. We made adjustments and we played well, but at crunch time we have to capitialize."
GCU will play host to Seattle U 7 p.m. Wednesday at Antelope Gymnasium. Fans unable to attend can follow the match with live stats and live video at
