Grand Canyon (7-8, 1-3) dropped a 3-1 decision to Seattle U in a Western Athletic Conference volleyball match at Antelope Gymnasium Wednesday.
GCU won the first set, 25-22, but dropped the next three, 25-21, 25-20, 25-19.
"Moving forward, we need to expect every night we will have challenges and we'll have to battle through those," said GCU coach Kris Naber. "Tonight, like every night, we learned a little more about ourselves and the girls know what they need to work on in the gym tomorrow."
Trailing 15-12 in the first, Grand Canyon ran off eight straight points off the serve of
Lanie Muys, who tied for the team lead with 11 kills, to go with four digs and three block assists. She had two aces during the span, while
Kristen Johannsen and
Kaitlynn Ausmus each had a kill. The Antelopes also took advantage of a number of Redhawk errors.
Though tied nine times, with a match-high five lead changes; GCU was unable to rally back for a 2-0 lead.
"Our girls have shown all year that they're fighters," added Naber. "We'll bounce back and be better from tonight's match."
Shannon Dugan also added 11 kills to go with nine digs. Ausmus finished with nine kills and nine digs.
Britta Forsythe had eight. Setter
Jessica Posse had 21 assists, eight digs and one service ace. Libero
Mackenzie Phelps had a team-best 20 digs and added six assists. Frosh setter
Bree Davis had 17 assists and two block assists.
Megan Davis had eight digs and four kills.
GCU is off on the road for six of its next seven matches. On Monday, the Antelopes play a non-conference match at Boise State. First serve is slated for 6 p.m. Arizona time. Fans can follow the match with live stats and live video links available at
