Rallying from a two-set deficit, Grand Canyon defeated host Chicago State 3-2 to collect its first Western Athletic Conference volleyball win Saturday.
The Antelopes improve to 7-6 overall and 1-1 in the WAC. They won by set scores of 21-25, 23-25, 25-19, 25-19, 15-7. Chicago State fell to 2-13 and 0-1.
There were 16 ties and 10 lead changes in the second set. Down 2-0, GCU trailed just two more times the rest of the match, once each in the third and fourth sets and both by mere 1-0 scores. The Antelopes forced a fifth set and led from start to finish in the decider.
Kaitlynn Ausmus, who finished with 13 kills, had two to start the set and give GCU a quick 2-0 advantage. She had four kills in the set.
Junior
Hayleigh Friemoth had a season-high 16 kills – five in the third set – and hit .412 (16-2-34). She added 13 digs for her second double-double of the season. Setter
Jessica Posse had a double-double, her third of the year, with a career-best 35 assists to go with 11 digs. Frosh
Hannah Hankins had her best match as an Antelope with eight kills and 11 blocks, including three solos. GCU out-blocked the Cougars 17-8. Hankins had two solos and three assists in the fourth set.
Playing only sparingly in the WAC opener Thursday against Kansas City, junior outside hitter
Shannon Dugan looked to be close to full strength Saturday. She had nine kills, nine digs and four block assists. She hit .389 (9-2-18) and had four kills and five digs in the fourth set.
The win was the 299th for head coach Kris Naber. It also marked the seventh five-set match of the season. GCU is 3-4 in the five-setters.
"The team battled its way back into the match, took control and, in the fifth set, never looked back," said Naber.
