The Grand Canyon University men's and women's cross country teams participated in their second event of the 2013 season, running in the Dave Murray Invitational hosted by the University of Arizona at the Del Urich Golf Course in Tucson, Ariz.
The University of Arizona, Arizona State, and Northern Arizona University joined GCU in the Division I section, while the Open field included Estrella Mountain Community College, Mesa Community College, Paradise Valley Community College, Pima Community College, and Western New Mexico.
The NAU men's squad was ranked second nationally in the latest United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association poll, while the ASU men were 28
th. U of A's women's team was ranked fifth in the same poll.
"The meet was faster this year than in previous years, with twice as many schools coming this year, including all of the Division I schools in Arizona," said head coach Michael Hoffmann. "It was a big step up in terms of competition, but I think that will help motivate our runners."
The men ran a distance of 4.25 miles (just short of 7k) and the women ran 3 miles (just short of 5k). Both of GCU's squads finished fourth in the D-I section.
"We had some strong performances today, and overall the women's average finishing times were faster than last year," said Hoffmann. "I thought
Nicole Zampino really stepped up with a time that was almost minute and a half faster than last year. She really hung up there with the top runners. For the men,
Joshua Munoz ran half a minute faster than last year, which was great to see."
For the second straight meet,
Brandon Kocmoud led the way for the 'Lopes men, running the distance in 23:45.27 to finish 20
th.
Patrick Hardwick posted a 24
th place finish with a time of 24:08.10. GCU's
Brandon Gonzalez (25:55.88), Munoz (26:14.65),
Erick James (27:10.36),
Stephan Bullard (27:32.15), and
DeJuan Muzzy (28:25.35) finished in the 26-30 spots.
Kelsi Klotter was the top finisher for the women, posting a mark of 19:33.67 to claim 27
th.
Jelena Andjelkovic (19:44.92), Zampino (19:51.89), and
Hannah Fishback (19:54.98) also finished in the top-30, taking the 28-30 spots in the event.
"Kelsi and Jelena have really set the bar for the women in leading the group, and I know that they are going to keep improving and pulling along the others behind them," Hoffmann explained. "At the end of the season we will hopefully have seven people running where they are now."
"It was the first race in college for some of the athletes, so it was a good way to get out and get a time on the board," Hoffmann added. "We have had a few injury issues over last couple of weeks, but the team is getting healthier, so I expect that our training will be god over the next month as we look to improve before the WAC championships in November."
GCU will be back in action on Sept. 28 at the UNLV Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev. Fans can check
