Grand Canyon won its fifth match in the last six and improved to .500 (5-5) on the season with a 3-0 victory over Arizona Christian in the home opener at GCU Arena Wednesday.
GCU won by set scores of 25-15, 25-9, 25-8.
After four ties and three lead changes in the first set, GCU took command. The Antelopes hit a match-best .483 in the second, with 16 kills on 29 tries with only two errors and finished with a .389 hitting percentage. They had 46 kills to the Firestorm's 16. Arizona Christian hit -.021. GCU is 10-0 all-time against the Phoenix NAIA member.
"I thought we were extremely disciplined," said coach Kris Naber. "We got off to a slow start, but we did a good job getting back to our game plan and maintained our consistency over three sets."
Senior middle blocker
Lanie Muys had a match-best and tied her career-high with 11 kills. She hit .526 (11-1-19). Junior outside hitter
Shannon Dugan had nine kills, 10 digs and a service aces. Junior libero
Mackenzie Phelps had 18 digs and two service aces.
Off the bench, making her GCU debut, redshirt-freshman middle blocker
Megan Byrnes had three kills and four block assists.
"We got our jitters out early and played well as a team," said Muys. "It was amazing to play in front of the home crowd (for the first time).
"One of our goals was to establish the middle and I think we did that well," said Muys. "We were really connecting well with our setters."

Hannah Hankins combined to have 17 kills on 33 attempts with only one error (.484).
Frosh setter
Bree Davis had a match-best 20 assists to go with two kills and three block assists. Senior setter
Jessica Posse had 19 assists, six digs and one service ace.
Senior outside hitter
Kaitlynn Ausmus added seven kills. Junior hitter
Hayleigh Friemoth had four kills, eight digs and two service aces.
Britta Forsythe added four kills, while
Megan Davis had three kills, four digs and two block assists.
"It was good to play at home and have that extra energy from the crowd," added Naber. "We really appreciate our fan support tonight and hope they all come back tomorrow and bring some friends."
GCU plays a non-conference match with Louisiana-Monroe Thursday at Antelope Gymnasium. First serve is set for 7 p.m. The Antelopes will be back in GCU Arena Sept. 26 for the Western Athletic Conference opener against Kansas City.
