Grand Canyon University baseball head coach Andy Stankiewicz today announced that
Gregg Wallis has joined the staff as an assistant coach. Wallis, who comes to the Antelopes from the University of Tennessee, will be part of GCU's inaugural season as members of the Western Athletic Conference.
"We are excited to have Gregg join our coaching staff," said Stankiewicz. "He has a passion for recruiting and for the player both on and off the field. Our players are going to be really impressed with his knowledge of the game and his commitment to them as student-athletes."
Wallis served as a volunteer assistant coach for the Volunteers in 2011 and was named the Director of Baseball Operations in 2012. During his time at Tennessee, he worked with outfielders, assisted associate head coach Greg Bergeron with the offense, and was the first base coach during games. Additionally, Wallis managed all Volunteer baseball camps, served as an academic liaison, and was responsible for the overall operations of the baseball program.
Prior to his time at Tennessee, Wallis spent three seasons at Cal State Fullerton, most recently serving as the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. While there, he worked with the team's outfielders, including Big West Freshman of the Year Michael Lorenzen.
Wallis was an undergraduate assistant coach at UC Irvine in 2006 and also served as the director of baseball operations for the squad that qualified for the 2007 College World Series. He then worked with the Scott Boras Corporation, helping to coordinate recruiting efforts, before joining the Fullerton staff.
"Gregg brings great knowledge of the college game, and we are very humbled and excited to have him join our staff this season," added Stankiewicz.
Wallis played four seasons as an infielder at UC Irvine from 2002-05. He was a three-time CoSIDA Academic All-American and four-time UCI and Big West Conference Scholar Athlete, graduating in 2005 with a degree in political science and minor in psychology.
