Grand Canyon opens play in the NCAA Division II Softball West I Regional in Arcata, Calif., Friday.
The Antelopes, the No. 4 seed in the West Region, will take on No. 5 seed and 17th-ranked nationally, Saint Martin’s, the champion of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, at 1:30 p.m. Top-seed host, and ranked No. 5 nationally, Humboldt State, the California Collegiate Athletic Association regular season and tournament champion will play No. 8 seed UC San Diego.
“Every team, when you get to the post season, is tough,” said GCU coach Ann Pierson. “You know that going in you can’t take any inning off.
We’re excited to represent the university again. It’s what we work the entire season for. We’re always excited to get back to the region tournament.
The West I Region is a double-elimination format with the winner advancing to next week’s Super Regional. The West II Region, going on simultaneously in St. George, Utah, includes host No. 2 seed Dixie State, the co-PacWest champion, No. 7 seed Hawai’i Hilo, co-PacWest champ and automatic bid recipient, No. 3 Sonoma State and No. 6 CSU Dominguez Hills, both from the CCAA.
Grand Canyon is in the post season for the third time in its 10-year history, all have come within the last four seasons. This year’s team has 39 wins, the second most in program history.
“We’ll have to have an aggressive approach and pitch better, defend better and play offense better than we did last week (in the regular season finale at Dixie State),” Pierson said. “We’ll have to be working on all cylinders.”
