Grand Canyon dropped its opener in the NCAA Division II Softball West I Region Tournament to No. 17 Saint Martin’s, 2-1, at HSU Softball Field in Arcata, Calif., Friday.
The Antelopes (39-18) will play UC San Diego, a 7-1 loser to No. 5 Humboldt State, at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in an elimination game.
Saint Martin’s scored one run each in the third and fifth innings to take a 2-0 lead. The Antelopes cut it to 2-1 in the fifth.
Haley Walker opened the inning with a single and was forced out at second base on ground ball off the bat of
Kayla Henry. Henry moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Claire Zampini and scored on a single by
Kelsey Barak.
GCU had two other opportunities with runners in scoring position. In the first, Henry and Zampini opened with back-to-back walks, but neither runner was able to reach third base. In the seventh, with one out, Henry reached on a walk and moved to second on a bunt single by Zampini. A bunt by Barak moved the runners to second and third, but the final out was recorded on a ground ball back to the pitcher off the bat of freshman
Kailey Regester.
GCU pitcher
Stephanie Pesqueira went the distance and fell to 20-11 on the season. She gave up eight hits, walked two and struck out five.
“I thought (Pesqueira) pitched well enough, but our lack of offense was disappointing,” said GCU coach Ann Pierson. “It was hard to tell if they were passive or just too particular. We’ll have to figure it out before tomorrow.”
Zampini had two of GCU’s four hits, all singles.
