'Lopes Continue Winning Ways, Run Streak to 15 Games

Sweep doubleheader today against Holy Names
The No. 23 Grand Canyon University baseball team swept their doubleheader against visiting Holy Names today at Brazell Stadium. With the pair of wins, the Antelopes improved to 24-5 overall and 17-1 in Pacific West Conference play. The Hawks dropped to 9-19 overall and 6-10 in the conference.
GCU continued their winning ways as today's victories increased their winning streak to 15 games, the longest in the program since the 1986 team won 17 straight from March 2-24.
Offensively, Harlyn Griffiths, Steven Swingle, Brandon Smith, and Michael Pomeroy each had 3 hits for the day, while Griffiths, Swingle and Smith also collected 3 RBI. Brian Kraft and Kyle Raidy both connected for their first home runs of the season.
GCU outhit the Hawks 23-16 between the two games, while scoring 19 total runs compared to 6 for HNU.
The ‘Lopes won the first game by a score of 9-5 behind a strong offensive effort, as they collected 13 hits. Starter Jorge Perez improved to 4-2 on the season after allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on 9 hits and a walk with 3 strikeouts over 6.0 innings of work.
"We are pitching well," said head coach Andy Stankiewicz. "He pitched to contact, and to their credit, they stayed in the game. They carried momentum into those later innings. But Jorge kept with it and kept getting ground balls. Today, we played really good defense. Paul (Panaccione) made a nice play on the very first groundball of the second game. Those things are big - we need to keep playing that kind of defense. Our bats are our bats, sometimes it comes and it goes. Pitching well and playing good defense is the mark of a good team and that is the way that we are going to have success."
The Hawks scored first on an unearned run after a one-out single came around to score following an error and base hit in the top of the second inning. GCU responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the frame when Swingle connected for a two-out double to right field and scored via an RBI single off the bat of Smith.
Kraft extended GCU’s lead to 3-1 in the third inning following a 2-run home run to right field to score Raidy, his first long ball of the season. Kraft the collected his third RBI of the game in the fourth when he plated Paul Panaccione with a single to left field with 2 outs on the board to hand the ‘Lopes a 4-1 advantage.
GCU broke open the contest in the fifth inning as they scored five runs on six consecutive hits, one of which was a 2-run triple from Swingle, his sixth three-bagger of the season.
HNU scored two runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to close the gap to 9-5, but that is the closest they would come in the first contest.
The ‘Lopes won the second game, 10-1, behind the second complete game effort from Andrew Naderer. The freshman left-hander, who improved to 6-1 on the season, allowed just 1 run (unearned) on 3 hits and a walk with 6 strikeouts in 7.0 innings.
GCU was the first to score in the second game, after the first four batters reached via singles. Seth Fretheim crossed home on an RBI base hit from Swingle for the first run, Griffiths represented the second run after scoring on a single to the left side from Pomeroy, and Derek Mendoza was able to score on a wild pitch with the bases loaded to hand the ‘Lopes a 3-0 lead after the first inning.
Raidy connected for his first long ball of the season, hitting a 0-1 pitch over the left field fence as the leadoff batter of the second inning. GCU added three more runs in the frame as the next three batters reached via two base hits and a walk. The ‘Lopes extended the lead to 9-0 after tacking on two more runs in the bottom of the third.
The Hawks broke the shutout in the top of the fourth inning after scoring on a two-out fielder’s choice where the runner was safe.
GCU secured their seventh double-digit scoring game of the year when Chris Lindmark scored via a single off the bat of Griffiths in the fifth inning.
"The younger guys are starting to get more comfortable," said Stankiewicz. "When you first hit the college level, there is some uncertainty. But I think Andrew, Seth, Garrett (Jeffries), Paul, and Brandon are starting to feel like they belong here and can play at this level. It is fun to watch them mature, they have a long way to go, but it is good to see them coming along."
