The ‘Lopes won the first game, 10-0, behind a strong pitching effort from
Coley Bruns, who improved to 6-0 on the season. Bruns surrendered just 4 hits and 2 walks with 5 strikeouts over 8.0 innings.
Jaren Drummond closed out the game with a scoreless ninth inning to secure the seventh shutout for GCU this season.
Paul Panaccione led the squad offensively in the first contest, going 4-for-5 with 2 RBI and 3 runs scored.
Steven Swingle added 2 hits for the ‘Lopes, while
Brandon Smith and
Kyle Raidy both added 2 RBI.
GCU got on the board in the third inning after Panaccione reached base via a single to lead off the inning. He came around to score after moving to second on a sacrifice bunt, a steal of third base, and on another sacrifice to cross home plate and hand the ‘Lopes an early 1-0 lead.
Swingle scored
Garrett Jeffries for the first run of the fourth frame and both he and
Brandon Smith came across home on a Panaccione double to left-center to extend GCU’s lead to 4-0. Panaccione represented the fifth run of the inning after moving to third on an error by the pitcher and scoring on a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Kyle Raidy.
Seth Fretheim came around to score on an RBI single from
Michael Pomeroy as GCU continued to build their lead to 6-0. In total, the ‘Lopes connected for five hits in the inning.
GCU drew a walk and connected for three straight hits as they tacked on four more runs in the fifth inning. The 10-0 score marked the second straight game and eighth time overall this season that the 'Lopes have scored in double-figures. That would end the scoring for both sides, as the ‘Lopes outhit the Hawks 12-5 and were errorless in the field.
GCU won the second game, 3-2, in comeback fashion as they trailed heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, but clutch hitting gave the 'Lopes their sixth series sweep of the season.
Cody Repenning picked up his second win of the season after tossing 2.2 scoreless innings in relief of starter
Trent Wilson.
Mark Jarrett secured his conference-leading seventh save. Offensively,
Derek Mendoza led the way after going 2-for-3 with a run scored and RBI.
The Hawks looked like they would take the early lead in the second game after loading the bases with one out in the first; however, Wilson induced a double play to end the threat.
Similar to the first game, GCU scored the first run of the game in the third inning on an RBI single off the bat of Mendoza. HNU responded with a run of their own in the top half of the fourth inning after the first three batters connected for hits. The Hawks claimed their first lead of the day and first since the second inning of series’ first game yesterday when they plated their second run of the fourth inning on a groundout to the second baseman.
The ‘Lopes were held scoreless for the next two frames before scoring the tying run on a wild pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth. GCU scored the go-ahead and game-winning run in the same inning on a sacrifice fly from Jeffries to score Swingle.
GCU will hit the road for the first of back-to-back road trips when they travel to Fresno Pacific for a four-game PacWest Conference set from April 4-6. Fans can follow the action by visiting
