Grand Canyon lost the first match of its two-match Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association series at Loyola Chicago’s Gentile Arena Wednesday.
The Antelopes (14-11, 5-6) lost 3-0 by set scores of 25-23, 25-16, 25-15. The teams play again Thursday in Chicago at 5 p.m. Arizona time.
GCU was led by senior outside hitter Jordon Tarantino with 13 kills and nine digs. Tarantino hit .312 with just three errors in 32 attempts. Senior libero Trent Bruns had 14 digs. Ryan Mather had four block assists, while Mather and Ben Ponnet each had six kills.
GCU got off to a good start, leading as late as 15-13 in the first set. A 3-0 run gave the ’Lopes the lead. Christian Ward and Ponnet each had kills and the Ramblers had an attack error. Loyola called timeout and went on a 5-0 run of its own after the break. GCU thwarted a pair of set points at 24-21, with a Ben Hunt kill and Loyola attack error, before the Ramblers ended the opening set.
"Loyola did a great job from the service line and we struggled as much as we have all year with our serve reception," said GCU coach Jeremy Price. "We'll have to receive serves better (Thursday) to win. It's always tough to win on the road in the MIVA and we won't be able to do that if we receive serve like we did tonight."
