The Grand Canyon University baseball team won the series finale at Hawai’i Hilo, 10-0, to complete a four-game sweep to open their Hawaiian road trip. The Antelopes improved to 16-5 overall and 11-1 in Pacific West Conference play, while the Vulcans fell to 5-21-1 overall and 5-15-1 in the conference. The win was also the seventh straight for the 'Lopes,
Through their four games in Hilo, GCU’s pitching staff allowed just 5 runs to the Vulcans while the offense put 20 runs on the board.
Starter
Trent Wilson improved his record to 3-1 on the season after tossing five scoreless frames, allowing just 5 hits and 4 walks with 5 strikeouts.
Kevin Behnke,
Austin Buelow and
Kyle Detwiler provided four scoreless innings in relief of Wilson.
Derek Mendoza continued to swing the bat well after going 3-for-4 at the plate, while
Brian Kraft,
Garrett Jeffries,
Steven Swingle, and
Ryan Tomita each collected three hits.
GCU scored twice in the top of the first inning to claim an early lead. Kraft led off the game with a walk and came around to score on an RBI single from Mendoza three batters later. Mendoza scored via a throwing error by the left fielder after advancing to second on a Jeffries single. Similar to the first inning, Raidy drew a walk to open the second and back-to-back singles by Tomita and Kraft scored Raidy as the ‘Lopes went up 3-0.
GCU added two runs in the fifth and five in the eighth inning with Swingle, Raidy, Tomita, Jeffries and
Paul Panaccione all picking up one RBI and
Michael Pomeroy collecting two in those frames as the ‘Lopes connected for eight more hits.
The ‘Lopes will next be in action when they travel to take on Hawai’i Pacific for a four-game series beginning on Wednesday at 7 p.m. (Arizona time). The two teams will play doubleheaders on Wednesday and Thursday.
GCU 10, UHH 0
