The Grand Canyon University baseball team swept their doubleheader tonight against Hawai’i Pacific at Hans L’Orange Park in Waipahu, Hawai’i. With the pair of wins, the Antelopes are now 18-5 overall and 13-1 in the Pacific West Conference. The Sea Warriors fell to 17-7 overall and 8-4 in conference play.
The ‘Lopes have won nine straight games and remained perfect (6-0) on the road.
GCU won the first game, 6-5, in 10 innings after HPU came from behind to tie the score in the ninth. Starter
Jorge Perez allowed 3 runs on 5 hits and 2 walks with 4 strikeouts over 6.0 innings.
Mark Jarrett was credited with his first win of the season, while
Kevin Behnke secured his second save. Brandon Bonilla kept his scoreless streak alive (12 outings) with 2.0 innings of scoreless relief.
In the first contest,
Steven Swingle went 3-for-4 with 2 runs and 3 RBI, while
Garrett Jeffries also had 3 RBI.
Seth Fretheim,
Michael Pomeroy, and
Brandon Smith each had 2 hits.
The Sea Warriors got on the board first with a three-run home run in the bottom half of the first inning. GCU made it a one-run game after scoring two in the top of the third inning when Pomeroy singled with one out and scored on Swingle’s RBI triple. Jeffries followed with an RBI single to score Swingle.
The ‘Lopes took a 4-3 lead after Fretheim opened the fifth inning with a double and moved to third when Pomeroy reached on a fielder’s choice. Fretheim scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Swingle to knot the score at 3 and Pomeroy served as the go-ahead run on a groundout from Jeffries.
Neither team scored again until HPU plated the game-tying run via an RBI double with one out. However, Jarrett stranded the runner on second base to force extra innings.
GCU struck first as Swingle connected for his second RBI triple of the game to score Pomeroy, who reached on a one-out single. Jeffries followed with a sacrifice fly to give the ‘Lopes a two-run cushion, 6-4, in the 10
th inning. The Sea Warriors responded with a run of their own, although it came by virtue of a double play. HPU then had runners on first and second, but Behnke was handed the ball for the ‘Lopes and struck out his lone batter to put an end to the game.
The ‘Lopes won the second game, 3-1, behind another strong pitching effort from starter
Coley Bruns. Bruns allowed just 1 run on 4 hits with 7 strikeouts over 6.0 innings to improve to 5-0 on the season. Bonilla and Behnke combined for a scoreless seventh inning to secure the win, as Behnke picked up his second save of the day and third overall. Bonilla also made his 13
th straight scoreless appearance for GCU.
Fretheim collected 3 more hits in the second game, while
Harlyn Griffiths, Smith, and
Ryan Moore each had 2 hits. Fretheim, Griffiths, and Smith also recorded an RBI in the contest.
GCU scored first in the second base after Fretheim doubled home
Ryan Tomita, who drew a one-out walk. Griffiths plated Fretheim with a sacrifice fly just one batter later. HPU broke the shutout with a two-out RBI single to cut GCU’s lead in half, 2-1, in the fifth inning.
The ‘Lopes tacked on another run in the seventh inning as Griffiths scored on a two-out RBI single from Smith.
The two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow at 7 p.m. (Arizona time) to complete the four-game series at Hans L’Orange. The ‘Lopes will then return home for a two-game series against Cal Poly Pomona beginning on Monday at 7 p.m.
