The No. 13 Grand Canyon University women’s basketball team defeated Holy Names, 70-47, in their first of four games in Northern California. The win was the eighth straight for the Antelopes, who improved to 19-4 overall and 11-1 in Pacific West Conference play. The Hawks fell to 10-12 overall and 4-9 in conference play.

GCU shot 49.2 percent (29-for-59) from the field, led by
Maylinn Smith with a season-high 31 points. Smith made 11 of her 19 shots (57.8 percent), including 5 of 9 three-pointers.
Judy Jones added 16 points, while
Chigozie Ekweozorled the way on the boards with eight rebounds.
The 'Lopes outrebounded the Hawks, 46-26, and grabbed 13 steals throughout the game, eight of which came in the first half.
The first 15 minutes of the contest were tightly contested as there were eight lead changes and three tied scores. After breaking a 23-23 tie with 5:36 on the clock via a layup by Ekweozor, GCU used a 15-5 run over the remainder of the half to carry a 38-28 lead into the locker room.
Smith led the way for the ‘Lopes in the first 20 minutes, already surpassing her previous season-high with 23 points. GCU shot an impressive 51.7 percent (15-for-29) in the first half, including draining 5 of 11 three point attempts (45.5 percent).
The ‘Lopes came out firing in the second half, posting a 46.7 field goal percentage (14-for-30). GCU scored the first four points of the half and did not let the Hawks come closer than 10 points for the remainder of the half. The ‘Lopes built their lead to as many as 27 points in the final 20 minutes.
