The Grand Canyon University men’s and women’s basketball teams retained their fifth spot for the second straight week in the latest NCAA Division II Regional poll, as released today. Nationally, the men are ranked 22
nd, while the women are No. 24.
The top-eight in the region poll will advance to the NCAA tourney that begins on March 15. The highest seeded teams in the region are afforded the opportunity to serve as the host institution.
The men have won six straight contests and nine out of their last 10. At 23-5 overall and 14-3 in Pacific West Conference play, the ‘Lopes are currently in a three-way tie for first place in the conference with Dixie State and Chaminade.
The 23 wins in a single season are the most by an Antelope squad since the 1996-97 team also won 23 games. The 42 two-season win total (19 last season) is the most since GCU won 46 over the 1995-96 (23) and 1996-97 (23) campaigns.
The women’s team is 22-6 overall and 14-3 in the conference as they are currently tied with California Baptist for the top spot. With their season-high 50-point win over BYU-Hawaii last night, the ‘Lopes secured a first round bye in the first-ever PacWest Conference tournament the weekend of March 7-9.
GCU has won 11 of their past 13 games and rank among the best teams in the country in rebound margin (second – 13.3) and scoring margin (13
th – 15.2).
Both teams will conclude the regular-season portion of the schedule when they travel to take on Azusa Pacific on Saturday at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. (Arizona time).
