Justine Johnson scored a career-high 21 points, including five 3-pointers, to lead Grand Canyon to an 82-72 victory over host Louisiana-Monroe in the Clarion Warhawk Classic at Fant-Ewing Coliseum in Monroe, La., Friday.
The Antelopes (8-2) earned a spot in Saturday's 6 p.m. championship game against unbeaten East Carolina (8-0), a winner over Alcorn State earlier in the day.
Five GCU players scored in double figures.
Judy Jones, back in her hometown, scored 16 points, six rebounds and four assists. Off the bench,
Asha McDonnell had her second straight double-figure game with 14.
Kaitlyn Petersen and
Deanna Daniels had 13 and 10, respectively.
It was GCU's third true road game win in as many tries and second where it had to come back from a deficit. The Antelopes trailed the Warhawks 45-36 at halftime and then outscored the home team 46-27 in the second half. Earlier this season, GCU trailed North Texas by 17 before rallying for an overtime victory.
"I'm really proud of our fight and resolve in the second half," said GCU coach Trent May. "It was a rough first half defensively and credit the girls and the coaching staff staying together to play our best in the last 20 minutes."
A Johnson 3-pointer, her fifth of the night, put GCU up for good, 64-62 at the 7:45 mark. Johnson was 7-for-11 from the field and 5-for-9 from 3-point range. McDonnell was 7-for-9 from the field and is 12-for-14 over the last two games.
"Justine had a great game and her teammates did a good finding her," added May. "Asha, on her birthday, did a great job – for the second straight game – finishing around the basket."
Johnna Brown had a team-best 11 rebounds.
"That's the advantage of having multiple players that contribute," said May of the six players with double-figure statistics. "It's anybody on any night and some nights it's everybody."
GCU had just nine turnovers.

"(East Carolina) is a well-coached, tough basketball team," said May. "When you're 8-0 you're doing things well and consistent. We know we'll have our hands full."
