Grand Canyon defeated previously-unbeaten East Carolina 86-76 to win the Clarion Warhawk Classic in Monroe, La., Saturday.
GCU (9-2) hit 44-for-55 (80 percent) at the free-throw, including 30-for-37 (81.8 percent) in the second half to win its fourth straight contest. East Carolina had won its first eight games and drops to 8-1.
"God is doing something special with this group," said GCU coach Trent May of his team. "Their resilience is incredible. It's a special thing as a coach, trust is our foundation and, they trust the coaches and each other. This is a great step to where we're headed."
Kaitlyn Petersen hit all 14 of her free-throw tries and led five Antelope double-figure scorers with 21 points.
Justine Johnson was 10-for-10 at the line and had 19 points. She also had a team-best three 3-pointers.
Deanna Daniels had 18. She was 8-for-12 at the stripe.
Judy Jones and
Johnna Brown scored 11 and 10, respectively. Jones had a team-best seven rebounds. Brown had team highs in assists (five) and steals (three).
Johnson, who scored a career-high 21 Friday in a win over host Louisiana-Monroe, was named the tournament MVP. Jones and Petersen were also selected to the all-tournament team.
East Carolina committed 38 fouls.
Grand Canyon led 35-32 at the break, taking advantage of 16 first-half Pirate fouls, hitting 14-for-18 (77.8 percent) from the line. GCU shot 45.5 percent from the field. GCU led by as much as five, 31-26 and trailed by four, 20-16.
Jones led GCU at the half with nine. Petersen had eight, including 6-for-6 at the line.
The Antelopes have outscored opponents by 10 points per game in the second half (38.5-28.5) and are 8-0 when outscoring teams in the final 20 minutes.
"I think you measure teams up in the first half," added May. "Whatever our staff is doing whether it's a big adjustment or little adjustment, they're buying into it. They really dig in (in the second half) and have that refuse to lose attitude."
GCU returns home for a 1 p.m. Dec. 23 contest against Hawai'i at GCU Arena. The Antelopes also have a 2 p.m. Dec. 28 contest at the arena against LIU-Brooklyn before beginning their initial season in the Western Athletic Conference.
