Grand Canyon hung close in the first set – there were nine ties and four lead changes – before falling in its final road contest of the season, 3-0, at Bakersfield Saturday.
GCU (9-17, 3-10) lost by set scores of 25-20, 25-9, 25-13. Bakersfield improved to 17-10 and 9-4 in the Western Athletic Conference.
"It was disappointing the way we represented the program tonight," said coach Kris Naber. "That's not GCU volleyball and that's not what we represent."
Senior
Lanie Muys had seven kills (7-1-17, .353) and four block assists. Senior
Megan Davis added six kills (6-0-14, .429), seven digs and one service ace.
"(Lanie and Megan) displayed the attitude we're looking for," added Naber.
Junior libero
Mackenzie Phelps had 17 digs and one service ace. Senior setter
Jessica Posse had 17 assists and seven digs.
In the first set, a kill from
Kaitlynn Ausmus gave GCU an 11-10 lead, but the Roadrunners answered with the next five points and led the rest of the set. In the second, GCU scored the first two points, getting a kill from Muys and an attack error from the 'Runners, but the hosts answered with the next seven points.
Bakersfield opened the third set with the first eight points.
Hayleigh Friemoth had four kills and six digs.
Shannon Dugan added four kills. Ausmus had six digs and Kristen Johannsen had a pair of block assists.
"We're lacking consistency," said Naber, whose club played one of their better matches in a near upset of Utah Valley, currently second in the WAC. "We've got to look at every night separately and realize it doesn't come easy."
The Antelopes will play their final five matches at home, three at Antelope Gymnasium and two at GCU Arena. On Friday, GCU plays host to Texas-Pan American 7 p.m. at Antelope Gymnasium.
"We want to wrap this season up with some positives," said Naber. "We want to play a high level of volleyball, be competitive and win some matches."
