Grand Canyon won its 10th match of the season and completed a season sweep of Texas-Pan American with a 3-0 victory at Antelope Gymnasium Friday.
After a close first set, Grand Canyon (10-17, 4-10) led the rest of the way, grabbing set score wins of 25-23, 25-21, 25-15. Sixteen of 17 ties and all seven lead changes were in the first set.
"I really felt we did a great job executing what we had been working on at practice this week," said coach Kris Naber.
The match was the first of five straight home contests to end the program's initial season in NCAA Division I. GCU beat UTPA 3-1 in Edinburgh, Tex., on Oct. 21, giving Naber her 300th career win.
"The team played with a high level of energy and were extremely consistent," added Naber. "We got better each set."
Tied 21-21 in the first, GCU scored three straight points getting kills from
Shannon Dugan and
Lanie Muys along with an attack error by the Broncs. UTPA cut it to 24-23 before another Bronc attack error.
Junior outside hitter
Hayleigh Friemoth had six first-set kills. The Antelopes had 16 of their 35 kills in the first set. Friemoth finished with nine kills and 11 digs.
Dugan, getting her first start since the Oct. 14 match at Seattle U, led the 'Lopes with 10 kills and had seven digs. Freshman
Hannah Hankins, getting her first start since a Sept. 30 contest at Idaho, had seven kills, hit .417 (7-2-12) and added a pair of block assists.
"Shannon was consistent and productive this week at practice and she was able to bring that to the match tonight," said Naber. "(Hankins) out-worked her opponent at practice this week and again tonight in the match. Like our team, she got better each set."
Mackenzie Phelps, the program's all-time leader in digs, added a match-best 15 to her total of 1,780. Friemoth and Dugan each had two service aces.
Jessica Posse had 19 assists.
Kristen Johannsen had two blocks, including one solo and added three kills. Off the bench,
Megan Davis added eight digs. Frosh setter
Bree Davis had eight assists.
The Antelopes defense helped hold the Broncs to a .102 hitting percentage (32-21-108). GCU hit .210 (35-13-105), with a match-best .231 (9-3-26) in the third.
