Grand Canyon opened its first Division I women's basketball season with an impressive 92-35 win over Western State at GCU Arena Saturday.
GCU (1-0) went on a 9-0 run to end the first half and outscored the Mountaineers 24-5 in the first eight minutes of the second to extend its lead to 34.
Much of the scoring on the decisive runs was off steals. The Antelopes finished with 18 and helped force 27 Western State turnovers, while on committing six of their own.
"I'm really enjoying the team chemistry we are establishing," said GCU coach Trent May. "I love our unselfish play and we're taking care of the basketball."
Division II All-American
Judy Jones, a preseason first team All-WAC choice, had 20 points and five steals to go with six rebounds.
Johnna Brown, a transfer from Dixie State, had 17 points and 11 rebounds to go with five steals.
Deanna Daniels had 16 points and five steals.
"With seven returners and seven newcomers, it felt good to see us bond and play well together," said Jones.
Western State, a member of the Division II Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, hung with the Antelopes much of the first half. It cut GCU's lead to six, 25-19, with 4:02 remaining. Jones, Brown, Daniels and
Jasmine Grayson scored the final nine points of the period to give GCU a 15-point lead at the break.
The Antelopes outscored the Mountaineers on points off turnovers 37-2 and on fastbreak points 22-2.
"We have to keep up our intensity, stay level-headed and not be on a rollercoaster," added Jones. "It was good early (in the first half) and in the second, we showed a lot more intensity. That's who we are."
All 12 players dressed played and 10 scored. All 12 either had a rebound or assists. GCU had 18 assists, led by point guard
Kaitlyn Petersen with five.
Asha McDonnell came off the bench to score seven points, grab nine rebounds and get three blocked shots.
GCU held Western State to only 26.7 percent field goal shooting and out-rebounded the Mountaineers 50-34.
Coach May is well-aware the challenges will get tougher down the road, but he's pleased with the start, including last week's 65-44 exhibition win over Eastern New Mexico.
"We've done what we've supposed to do," said May. "We haven't been sloppy and we haven't played out of character. The girls are enjoying playing together."
The Antelopes are off until a Nov. 19 home game with Western New Mexico.
