After a sluggish start, Grand Canyon improved to 2-0 in its first NCAA Division I season with a 79-52 victory over Western New Mexico at GCU Arena Tuesday.
The Antelopes trailed 11-10, held a slim three-point lead, 26-23, with under six left until halftime, before going on an 11-4 run to end the half. GCU kept its double-digit lead the entire second half with the final margin being the largest lead of the game.
GCU was outrebounded (22-19) in the first half and had 10 turnovers in the first 20 minutes. The Antelopes finished plus-eight, 41-33 on the boards.
"We weren't sharp," said junior guard
Kaitlyn Petersen, who tied a career-high in scoring – set when she was at Cal State Northridge – with 17 points and achieved a career-high in assists with eight. "At times, we just didn't show discipline. We have to stay engaged in the game at all times."
Petersen was a first-half bright spot, scoring 15 of her points.
Johnna Brown had 20 points and 10 rebounds, her second double-double in as many games.
Deanna Daniels had eight points and five steals. Frosh
August Touchard had her first collegiate double-digit scoring game with 10.
Judy Jones had nine rebounds.
A 15-4 run in a five-minute span in the second half extended GCU's lead to 69-45 with 5:06 left. Daniels had two of her steals during the run.
Jasmine Grayson – who started the flurry with a three-point play – Touchard,
Asha McDonnell, Petersen and Daniels all added to their point totals.
"The start of the second half we were still a little flat, but we started making a few plays with our hustle," said Brown. "Deanna (Daniels) got us going when she dove on the floor for a loose ball and a got a couple steals."
Ten different players got into the scoring column. Nine players had at least one rebound and seven had at least one steal.
"We got better as the game went on," said coach Trent May. "We know, because of our standards, we have things to improve. We want to play 40 minutes, just like every team, that's the goal.
"We had reference points both good and bad tonight and glad to have that with a win."
GCU will be on the road for its next nine games. The Antelopes head to Denton, Tex., for three games in four days at the North Texas Tournament. They open against Bethune-Cookman Saturday at 10 a.m. After the Texas trip, GCU heads to the Gulf Coast Showcase in Florida, opening with Mississippi State. The team has games against Nevada and a two-day tournament at Louisiana-Monroe before its next home game, a Dec. 23 date with Hawai'i.
"It's great to win games," added Brown, "but we know there are bigger games ahead and we have to step it up."
