Grand Canyon improved to 3-0 and won its first Division I game against a Division I opponent with a 57-45 victory over Bethune-Cookman in the Hospitality Hill Challenge in Denton, Tex., Saturday.
It was only the second win over a Division I team in program history. GCU beat Northern Arizona on Dec. 3, 1994, 64-50, in Flagstaff.
"You only get one chance to get the first," said GCU coach Trent May. "Our staff did a good job preparing the girls for this game and I'm proud of their efforts and the girls' efforts.
"We had some travel delays (yesterday) and to have a long road trip and playing in the morning, I was very pleased with our maturity, preparation and energy."
Deanna Daniels led the way with 20 points and nine rebounds. She was 10-for-10 at the free-throw line. GCU hit 22-for-28 (78.6 percent) at the stripe.
Johnna Brown had her third double-double in as many games with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Kaitlyn Petersen had 15 points and six steals.
Justine Johnson had six steals and
Judy Jones had six rebounds.
The Antelopes jumped out to a 17-7 lead, but the Wildcats answered with an 11-0 run. GCU regained the lead for good, 23-22, on a Daniels' putback with 1:17 left in the first half.
GCU's double-figure second-half lead was cut to three, 38-35, with under 10 minutes to play, but the Antelopes were able to get a bigger cushion when Petersen scored off of a steal, Daniels added a pair of free throws and Brown scored off an offensive rebound.
"We'll find out more and more as the season goes that if you don't play to your potential for a three- or four-minute span, you can lose a lead or get further behind if you're trailing," said May. "We're at the level now where the mental lapses can create a tight game and it'll take a mentally tough team to be able to separate and we were able to do that today."
GCU scored 22 points off turnovers, 13 more than Bethune-Cookman and out-scored the Wildcats 22-12 at the free-throw line.
"One of the things we preached all week is our awareness on defense," said May. "We played sound defense and we challenged our players to win the battle on the boards (36-35). We want to have the wins within the win."
The Antelopes continue play in Denton with a 2 p.m. game Sunday against another D-I transitioning program, Abilene Christian. Fans can follow live stats at
