Though its attempt of upsetting Utah Valley, currently second in the Western Athletic Conference, fell short, Grand Canyon had a record-setting night in Orem, Utah Thursday in a 3-1 loss to the Wolverines.

Mackenzie Phelps became the program's career leader in digs. She had 28 on the night, upping her total to 1,748. She surpassed Laurann Durbin, who had 1,730 from 2008-11.
"Her last dig said it all," described coach Kris Naber. "She dug a ball out of her zone and across the court. Her mentality is there's no ball in this gym that she can't get. That's why she is our all-time dig leader with still six matches left in her junior year."
Grand Canyon (9-16, 3-9) lost by set scores of 22-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-21. Utah Valley improved to 18-12 and 11-3 in the WAC.
"We teach them to compete until the last point and that's what they're doing," added Naber.
"We had a solid all-around game, now our focus is on finishing and getting the confidence to do that every night."
While Phelps achieved a school mark, a number of players had career and season highs.
Hayleigh Friemoth had a season-high 19 kills and career-high 14 digs.
Lanie Muys had a career-best 13 kills and tied a career-high with seven block assists.
Kristen Johannsen had a career-best four solo blocks and season-high five block assists. She added seven kills and a .375 attack percentage (7-1-16).
Megan Byrnes had a career-best seven blocks including a career-best six block assists. As a team, GCU had 16 blocks, one shy of a season-high of 17, achieved in a five-set match in Sept. 28 at Chicago State.
The Antelopes out-blocked the Wolverines 16-8 and had 82 digs to UVU's 77. For the match, GCU had 53 kills and hit .191 (53-22-162), while Utah Valley hit .211 (62-25-175) and had more service aces 6-3.
Kaitlynn Ausmus finished with 11 kills.
The Antelopes hit .300 (17-5-40) to win the first set.
"It was one of our best offensive nights in weeks and we had a great all-around game," said Naber. "It's exciting to see it come together and exciting to see what they're capable of. "
The Antelopes play their final road match of the season 5 p.m. Saturday at Bakersfield. Fans can follow live stats at www.gculopes.com.
