The Grand Canyon University men's golf team won the team title at the UNO Maverick Collegiate Invitational, posting a three-round score of 31-over 895 to finish 14 strokes ahead of second-place finisher Nebraska-Omaha, who hosted the two-day tournament at the Arbor Link Golf Club in Omaha, Neb. The Antelopes had three golfers finish in the top-10 and all five of their student-athletes place in the top-15.
North Dakota State finished third in the team standings at 61-over 925.
The 'Lopes tied with North Dakota State for the tournament lead with 33 birdies, while leading the field in pars (169), Par 4 scoring, and Par 5 scoring.
"Anytime you can win, it's a good feeling," said head coach Mark Mueller. "It was our first win at the Division I level, so we will remember it for a long time. It is definitely something to be proud of. Today was the toughest day of golf we have had, the wind was blowing and it was cold, so it wasn't easy."
GCU's
Mark Geddes was the individual medalist with a 54-hole total of two-under 214 as he was the lone player to shoot under par on the Par 72 course. He led the tournament field with 12 total birdies and led the field in both Par 3 (-2) and Par 4 (+3) scoring.
Teammate
Hayden Webb and UNO's Karl Kreisser tied for second overall at seven-over 223. Webb tied for the fifth-most birdies with seven over the two days, and led the tournament on Par 5 scoring at six-under as he moved up from a tie for seventh following yesterday's two rounds.
"The guys hung in there and did a really good job, they battled today," added Mueller. "Mark and Hayden played really well. It was good to see Mark get the win, he has wanted that for a long time. So hopefully this is the first of many to come for him. Both he and Hayden shot 36 on back nine, which was probably the lowest on the day in the tournament."
Colton West tied for seventh after carding an 11-over 227, while
Billy Comeaux and
Alec Dahlquist tied for 15
th at 16-over 232.
"Overall, it was a good team effort, and hopefully we can get another win in a couple of weeks."
The 'Lopes will next be in action Oct. 25-26 at the Price's "Give 'Em Five" Invitational hosted by Texas-El Paso at the Butter Field Trail Golf Club in El Paso, Texas. The tournament will serve as the final one for GCU in the fall. Fans can follow the action by visiting
